#BLM-also known as Black Lives Matter is what some refer to as a modern-day Civil Rights Movement. It all began when three women by the names of Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi, and Patrisse Cullors gave a name to this movement after the death of Trayvon Martin, a young black man who was shot and killed after purchasing skittles at a convenience store by George Zimmerman. Zimmerman went to court where he was found not guilty of the crime which he clearly committed. As we reach the last few months of 2016, statistics show that out of a total of 827 people killed in America, 202 black men were killed by police. That’s roughly a fourth of the total deaths till now. Some of the well-known deaths by police include Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and most recently, Keith Lamar Scott. All of these people were innocent, but died for their lovely melanin. They choose to consider this movement a “terrorist organization”. The people saying this are usually privileged white people. The ones who culturally appropriate black people. The ones who say the n word. The same people who say that they aren’t racist because they have black friends, but they don’t speak out about social injustice towards black people. These are the people who are on the internet voicing the wrong things. They can sit here and feel sad about Harambe for months on end, but when an innocent black person gets killed, they will be the first say, “All lives matter” or ask “What about black on black crime?” Now don’t me wrong, every life matters in this world but with #BLM, we are focusing on black lives. According to Zimmerman, him and Martin had an altercation, where it led to Zimmerman shooting Martin in the chest, killing him. He claims it was self-defense. Photos and reports were leaked, which caused more and more people protesting to acquire Zimmerman getting charged for his actions. The end result led to a not guilty verdict in July, 2013. Freedom of speech is a right that is granted to every individual, otherwise, it will be illegal. Vinson faults people of different ethnicity for taking the freedom of speech away. Police brutality is one of the main issues that BLM in concerned with. Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Garner and several others are examples of individuals BLM claims have been wrongfully killed by the hands of law enforcement. These individuals were supposedly innocent and therefore killed unjustly. Black suspects are more likely to be shot due to the fear of being in possession of a weapon. One misconception of this movement is that it is a movement that says Black lives matter more than others. While this is not true, a large amount of people strongly agree with that statement. However, most of the people that disagree with this movement disagree because they are color-blind to the racism in the society. In actuality, according to Blacklivesmatter.com, “#BlackLivesMatter is a call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society. Black Lives Matter is a unique contribution that goes beyond extrajudicial killings of Black people by police and vigilantes.” The BLM movement is not just about the killings of Black people it is about all the injustices all African Americans face. For example, when an African American walks through a parking lot there is an immediate reaction to make sure the car is locked because unconsciously people view African Americans as dangerous and scary. The BLM movement wants to eradicate the subtle color-blind racism as well as the blatant racism that is being displayed in the media. Most of us have been taught that we always need to be on our best behavior and try to understand and value different views. I am going to exercise my right to protest by refusing to understand why some of my fellow classmates, sharing a classroom with me because just like me they are on a quest for knowledge, find it difficult to grasp the concept of Black Lives matter. Stop saying all lives matter. We already know that. Black Lives Matter is not an anti-white slogan meant to suggest that other lives do not matter, especially white lives. It is a movement to address the racial disparities practiced by law enforcement agencies throughout our nation. Many feel that Black Lives Matter is only causing more hate and violence through their protest. The BLM believes, however, that racial bias among police officers is at an all-time high and that their fight is reasonable. The BLM argues they are simply seeking equality for blacks. The movement claims that they are being targeted in these attacks; in all reality, most crimes committed towards a black person is by their own genus. The number of crimes against our own race by our own race is far larger than those white-on-black crimes that are effortlessly shouted in the air when trying to get the black voice heard. For example, in Baltimore the gun violence has jumped up a staggering sixty percent in 2015 in comparison to 2014. Overall, many believe that the undeviating war on racism in today’s society is fueled by police brutality and anti-police violence. Specifically, the Black Lives Matter movement, which is the source of controversy regarding these topics. To summarize, this campaign is “both a hashtag and a political project that formed after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin.” (Miller). Later in the article Chelsea Fuller, senior communications associate at The Advancement Project, a multi-racial civil rights organization, states “The Black Lives Matter movement is to deal with anti-black racism, to “push for black people’s right to live with dignity and respect” and be included in the American democracy that they helped create” (Miller).
When a person thinks about Black Lives Matter, he or she may visualize African Americans fighting for justice and equality. The movement Black Lives Matter was created to bring awareness to systematic racism, police brutality and social injustice that African Americans face on a daily basis. In contrary, All Lives Matter downplays the fact that black people are looked down upon in society. All Lives Matter may seem like an innocent title, but it emphasizes that justice for black people is not necessary. Black Lives Matter is not a movement that believes all lives do not matter; nevertheless, it highlights the fact that black lives are taken for granted by the judicial system.
Black Lives Matter is not a bandwagon to hop on, nor is it a hashtag or a slogan. Black Lives Matter is a movement. To not support the movement or to think that the movement does not need support is outright depraved, demeaning and degrading. We too often think that retweeting, tweeting or sharing a photo on social media is supporting the movement and it’s not! This is no longer the 1960’s. We have gained our rights: that is no longer the fight. The fight is receiving justice for our black people, so no effective protesting is no longer sitting at countertops, it is no longer peaceful marching and it is no longer bus boycotting The new protest is to educate ourselves, to show respect, to get involved in the justice system, to raise black lawyers, to vote and to do jury duty. All of these things are needed to benefit the movement in stopping the corruptness in our justice system.

The movement began as a hashtag on Twitter in 2013 in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the Treyvon Martin case. Zimmerman shot Martin to death, claiming it was in self defense as he felt the young man looked threatening because it was dark and he was wearing a hoodie. He was acquitted of both manslaughter and second degree murder. Activists felt that this case was an extreme example of how little value black lives seem to have to the greater community. I truly feel that the outraged party are missing the concept of the whole movement. Black Lives Matter is necessary movement that is not saying the other lives do not, and it should continue until that unspoken social tension is resolved. With movements such as all live matters there has been a lot of tension.There have been riots and with that, outrage is completely understandable and outrage should be felt unanimously across America for these barbaric acts of vandalism and violence. I feel that when you say Black Lives Matter people feel as if they 're being
