#BLM-also known as Black Lives Matter is what some refer to as a modern-day Civil Rights Movement. It all began when three women by the names of Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi, and Patrisse Cullors gave a name to this movement after the death of Trayvon Martin, a young black man who was shot and killed after purchasing skittles at a convenience store by George Zimmerman. Zimmerman went to court where he was found not guilty of the crime which he clearly committed. As we reach the last few months of 2016, statistics show that out of a total of 827 people killed in America, 202 black men were killed by police. That’s roughly a fourth of the total deaths till now. Some of the well-known deaths by police include Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and most recently, Keith Lamar Scott. All of these people were innocent, but died for their lovely melanin. People all around the world have sent their prayers and support through social media using the hashtag or even going to protest in various areas. “Black …show more content…

They choose to consider this movement a “terrorist organization”. The people saying this are usually privileged white people. The ones who culturally appropriate black people. The ones who say the n word. The same people who say that they aren’t racist because they have black friends, but they don’t speak out about social injustice towards black people. These are the people who are on the internet voicing the wrong things. They can sit here and feel sad about Harambe for months on end, but when an innocent black person gets killed, they will be the first say, “All lives matter” or ask “What about black on black crime?” Now don’t me wrong, every life matters in this world but with #BLM, we are focusing on black lives. I can’t say all white people are like this because there are some who have common sense and stand with this movement, like Bernie
