The Birth of Sat'RaRawfoodoula Instead of focusing on what others were or were not doing, I decided to start focusing on me and goals I wanted to accomplish. One day, I was on the computer surfing the net and happened to get on social media. I happened to come by a post about The Birth Well doula training. A doula is a professional birth support person who assist women emotionally, physically, and with information during pregnancy, birth, and for a short while during postpartum. This sounded like a perfect opportunity to exercise my getting out and broadening my circle and meeting new people all the while fulfilling my birth worker goals from long ago. I decided to look into it, so on the day of the Q & A meeting I attended. I learned about the process, and I signed up for the classes. I was both super excited, and also super nervous at the same time because my family and I were experiencing financial hardships at the time, and I was about to be taking $400 dollars of our funds and investing into a career that was all up to me on whether or not it flourished. She checks me, and tracks my surges. My surges are not as frequent as earlier so she recommends for me to sit on the birthing ball. I sit up right on the birthing ball, and lean back on Poet for support and those surges are coming now. I tense up, and my midwife's assistant beautifully guides me through each surge, encouraging me to relax instead of tense up with each contraction. After a while of being on the birthing ball, I am guided to the bathroom, and I sit on the toilet for a few of the surges and finally I am ready to get in the tub and begin pushing. All parents wish to have a child that is potty trained quickly and easily, Childbirth Educator Lora Schwacke tells her clients. However, more often than not, the process turns into a long, drawn out, and stressful experience for both parent and child. She informs her potty training parents that the one major facet of potty training that is usually missed is the consistency. A child must have consistency if they are expected to learn anything new, and that includes potty training. Unless the parent takes the time to ensure that the routine of using the potty is put in place, the child will not have as much success. Think of it like a game of baseball, it is hard for a team to score if the referee is constantly changing the rules of the game.
The first stage of labor actually has two phases itself. The first phase is called early labor. During early labor you should start to feel something like light cramps. It is also common to feel pressure in your lower back. This is the start of what is called “contractions”. Contractions help your uterus (female reproductive organ) stretch and relax, along with moving the baby's head down into the birth canal. Another thing that happens during early labor is your cervix (narrow neck like passage forming the lower end of the uterus) will start to get shorter, also known as “thinning out”. Your cervix will go from about three to five centimeters to looking as if it could be part of the uterus. You will also start to dilate (make or become wider, larger, or more open) during this phase. When your contractions get closer together, about four to five minutes apart, you should call your doctor or midwife and go in to get checked. They tell how far dilated you are in centimeters, zero to ten. The next phase to this stage is active labor. This phase will consist of you dilating more rapidly as well as your contractions getting harder and closer together. You may also begin to feel nauseous during active labor. Today was my second day on labor and delivery. When Grace and I first arrived, we were sent to change. After Grace and I changed into our scrubs, we went to the front desk to receive our tasks. A registered nurse (RN) asked us if we would like to see a vaginal birth or a caesarean section (c-section). I choose to watch a c-section, and Grace decided to observe a vaginal birth. Once we decided on who would do what, we went our separate ways.
As the title suggests, a “pushed” birth is one that is unnecessarily induced, and/or managed, with an abundance of unjustifiable intrusions. The title of the book describes the feelings of many American women who feel “pushed” into making drastic decisions – decisions that they may not be emotionally prepared for. Block expresses that the title of her book came long before she even wrote it (Block, 2007, page xiii). Through her many conversations with expectant mothers, she would often hear them express a desire for a non-interventional and natural birth. Unfortunately, many women “felt tremendous pressure from their medical providers to go against instinct and … to induce labor, to schedule a cesarean, to lie back during labor when every cell in their body felt like moving. Women are supposed to push their babies out; instead, they felt they were being pushed around” (Block, 2007, page xiii).
My thoughts, was if I could help young mothers to become better mothers to their children. I resigned from CGA, in 2008 and opened the doors to my daycare in 2009.I was a business owner, opened my 1st home based daycare, and that was my moment. It quickly became apparent to me that this was not just babysitting someone’s child/children; this was in fact a business with laws and regulations. I read and researched ever and anything I could find on daycare and how to run a business. Myself along with my little staff and the parents I had a team; and with their help my business became a company. While running a daycare and going through my educational journey, I have learn how blind I was to all the other ideas, theories and practices of other people. How accepting opinions and criticism would help me grow as a person and educator. My Company is made up of two separate businesses. But both have the same goal to teach children, and adults about child care. The daycare has been such a powerful influence in my life; it has given me a great since of accomplishment, and satisfaction.
Watching my brother struggle and then being able to overcome these difficulties, as well as seeing other children around him who were not as fortunate, really pushed me, even at a young age, to make a difference. My family, both immediate and extended, were very supportive, and I felt a real positive push towards working hard to achieve that goal of working in health care. In high school, I was fortunate enough to do a cooperative placement at the Peterborough Regional Health Center’s Intensive Care Unit.
The hospital room holds all the usual scenery: rooms lining featureless walls, carts full of foreign devices and competent looking nurses ready to help whatever the need be. The side rails of the bed smell of plastic. The room is enveloped with the smell of plastic. A large bed protrudes from the wall. It moves from one stage to the next, with the labor, so that when you come to the "bearing" down stage, the stirrups can be put in place. The side rails of the bed provide more comfort than the hand of your coach, during each contraction. The mattress of the bed is truly uncomfortable for a woman in so much pain. The version of childbirth that we’re used to is propagated by television and movies. A woman, huge with child, is rushed to the hospital when her water breaks. She is ushered into a delivery room and her husband hovers helplessly as nurses hook her up to IVs and monitors. The woman writhes in pain and demands relief from the painful contractions. Narcotic drugs are administered through her IV to dull the pain, or an epidural is inserted into the woman’s spine so that she cannot feel anything below her waist. When the baby is ready to be born, the doctor arrives dressed in surgical garb. The husband, nurses and doctor become a cheerleading squad, urging the woman to, “Push!” Moments later, a pink, screaming newborn is lifted up for the world to see. Variations on this theme include the cesarean section, where the woman is wheeled to the operating room where her doctors remove the baby through an incision in her abdomen.
I enjoyed this experience so much, that I decided to go back to volunteer for Change Point, and will be going there once a week. This experience had the impact it did because I got to connect with the community in which change Point serves and help assist others. By doing this, I gained hands-on experience in which will help me in my future career. I also was able to enhance my skills in being a leader and in communication. So, I told my doctor I wanted to be induced. After all, my due date was only two weeks away and only five percent of women give birth on the day determined by their doctors. When I was finally there, I looked at the outside, the hospital was set in a suburban – like area, and when I went inside the building, I was in a welcoming ultramodern facility. I went straight to the labor and delivery section where they said my doctor had gone out of town; nobody believed that I was supposed to be induced that day. It took them like 15 minutes to confirm what I had told them, to finally decide to take me to a room to connect all kinds of tubes to my body. I went into the room; it looked very comfortable, but it was freezing. I lay on the typical hospital bed, one of those that make sleeping and resting easier.

Child Birth can be a beautiful, yet unimaginable experience any mother and family member can encounter. It is a process of emotional and social involvements that make-up a natural human being. The familiarity of childbirth can play an important role in life for every individual, especially the mothers who are in labor or in delivery. By the time the hospital gave my mother a room, it was midnight and I was very sleepy. I was told by my mom to go to the room with her so I did. I was falling asleep on a sofa the hospital had, while my mom was screaming her lungs out. Looking back at this I have no idea why I was in the delivery room. I was later kicked out of it by mom anyways. I wanted the memory of me being in the delivery room for that one hour to stick with me as a reminder of how hard it is to be a mother from the start. Years later, it did stick with me, and it helped me be a better daughter.I realized my mom went through a lot to bring me into this earth and it wasn’t easy for her to do so. From that moment on, even though I was kicked out of the room as soon as I saw her again, I have been as helpful and careful with her as I could ever since.
