If you are in some way like me, we all have described ourselves with bipolar disorder. At least I have. Many if not all, people suffer through different emotions all the time, from crying to happy sometimes in very short periods of times. They aren’t considered episodes nor are they considered dangerous in any way. We just happen to let our emotions get the best of us. That doesn’t mean we are bipolar, we are simply humans. Many people have different emotional disorders, which can be confused with bipolar disorder, but it is not the same thing. Then why do we underestimate the people who have this disorder, to them this isn’t something they’d like to joke about so why should we? Even though times have progressed and there has been a lot of improvement in science. Bipolar disorder is known as manic-depressive disorder and is considered a major psychiatric disorder, also known as a serious mental illness. Bipolar disorder is still not completely understood. It’s hard to truly understand how this disorder really works. Although they have figured out the genetics play a big role into this disorder. We all have our bad days, and mood swings. Why aren’t we all bipolar? Many patients end up getting misdiagnosed with similar disorders. Many people with bipolar disorder get misdiagnosed with schizophrenia. This is common because the both psychotic disorders have a lot in common. After years psychologists can distinguish the two disorders. “Even for those patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder, the lag between initial treatment-seeking and the correct diagnosis is often more than 10 years” (Zimmerman, 2010).
