Children that come from an abusive environment in biological homes experience a range of adverse side effects and disadvantages while in out-of-home placement. The results of child abuse on the children can be long lasting and extremely serious, with some affecting the child throughout the entirety of their lives. These children, with both short and long term effects on their lives and bodies, are a challenge for some foster parents. The level at which some children are at requires extensive and specific training for foster parents and even for “foster siblings” (or the biological children of foster parents that will be living with other foster kids) in order to know how to handle situations and maintain control of the situation.
Educational Defects and Attention Deficits For one, children with a history of abuse tend to experience more difficulties with learning and just in general in the the school environment. Robert (1993) stated that those children that were physically abused at a younger age run a much higher risk of having serious neurological or mental handicap and thus having a disadvantage in the learning environment.
