In the book The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding a couple of boys stranded on an island must survive in the absence of adult supervision. These boys struggle between the choice of either constantly working to be rescued or beginning a new life on the island. In the end, there is a lot of killing and savage like behavior. I believe that both the environment and biological factors can be blamed for the boys’ savage and immoral behavior, however, the biological factors had the most impact on their behavior. For example, in chapter 4 Slater introduces a crime that happened in the 1900’s where a women was raped and murdered in a residential area. Sadly no one helped her, eventhough many people heard her screaming for help. This shows that people act differently when they are around a big group of people. Everyone assumed that eventually someone would help the poor girl. In Lord of the Flies the majority of the group decided to follow Jack in the last two chapters. They thought he would provide protection and food. As a result Jack took his sense of authority to the next order and would punish these boys if they did something he did not like. The boys probably didn’t know whether to leave Jack’s group because no one knew how many of them would be willing to leave the group. Ralph was on his own in the end and stood very little chances of surviving against Jacks group. The goal of any person stranded in an island is surviving. These boys are well aware of this goal and know they must stick with the leader that will help them survive the longest. The options these boys have for possible leaders are Ralph and Jack. On one hand, Ralph is focused on building a signal fire to be rescued.
