With more than thousands of stores operating in over a hundred different countries, Tommy Hilfiger is one of the most recognized brands in the world when it comes to fashion. The designer clothes allow people to have the classy yet cool look at the same time. In this essay I will be discussing with you Tommy Hilfiger more specifically about the man of the company Tommy Hilfiger, Tommy Hilfigers growth as a global company, as well as its success and awards. As Hilfiger once said, “ The road to success is not easy to navigate, but with hard work, drive and passion, it's possible to achieve the American dream.”
Firstly I will be talking to you about Tommy Hilfiger so you can get to know him a little better. Hilfiger was born March 24, 1951 he was the second child out of nine. He is of German-Swiss descent as well as irish descent, his parents a jeweler and a nurse raised him to be a catholic. His parents wanted him to get a traditional career and attend college to achieve that career. Elmira Free Academy was the high school that he attended and then later went to GST BOCES Busch Campus where he would learn machine shop trades. Instead of furthering his education at the age of 18 he went into working retail. Hilfiger would buy jeans specifically bell bottoms customize them himself and resell them to Browns which was a shop in Elmira. Hilfiger later opened up his own shop called The Peoples Place. Over the years shops had closed down because business had been taken by the Arnot Mall. “Over the course of the next seven years Hilfigers store went bankrupt, he was only 25.” At this point he knew he had to enroll in something and get an education so he did and he took commerce. In conclusion I have told you a little about Tommy Hilfiger's life and his rise to success. I told you how his empire grew and became so successful and the awards he achieved for his continued success. I believe Hilfiger will continue to strive and be a successful man because you is a hard working, dedicated, and motivated man. He has all the attributes of a man that could run an empire like he does. I found researching him very interesting and i was happy to learn all the stuff that I never knew about him! When this Wheel of Fortune-style advertisement was unveiled in 1985, the public easily identified the first three designers as Ralph Lauren, Perry Ellis, and Calvin Klein, but who was this fourth designer? The fourth designer, to whom the ad belonged to, was Tommy Hilfiger. At that time, Tommy Hilfiger and his recently begun company specializing in men's fashions were unknown. However, in less that a decade since that first advertisement appeared, Tommy Hilfiger has become a hugely successful company at the forefront of the fashion industry. As Jack Hyde, a Fashion Institute of Technology professor, has stated, "It's Hilfiger, Hilfiger, Hilfiger."
Even though he dropped out of fashion school, he still managed to start his own fashion line.
At age 25 he opened his first collection and it was a big success, inspired by his mentor Balenciaga. The collection was based on evening wear as well as economical white cotton shirts that were both inexpensive and fresh-looking. After that collection, his name was recognizable and his biggest success was the “Bettina” blouse; named after the famous Paris’ top model. This blouse was his signature piece in his cotton collection. Givenchy’s philosophy was: “Keep it simple. Eliminate everything that interferes with the line.” ...
Thirty years into the business he expresses his thoughts on essential personal attributes and preparation to success. Although there are many prominent luxury brand designers, it is important to recognize Perry Ellis, who is known as the original American designer that sells primarily sportswear and casual clothing with a unique twist.. Perry Edwin Ellis was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on March 3, 1940. He lived with his grandma in a house full of his aunt’s vintage clothing, which began his passion and tastes for his designs. When he grew up, he majored in business at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and later went to New York University in New York to earn his master’s degree in retailing. He began his career in 1963 as a sportswear buyer for an upscale store, Miller & Rhodes in Richmond, Virginia, and was later promoted as a merchandiser for John Meyer of Norwich Conn. in 1967, so he went back to New York. In 1974, he was asked by Manhattan Industries to merchandise the Vera sportswear collection, where he then designed a line called Portfolio. This motivated him to launch his own company called Perry Ellis Sportswear in 1978 with Manhattan Industries as the parent company
