Situated in Philadelphia, a historically and culturally significant city, the University of Pennsylvania provides the apt environment to foster my intellectual and personal growth. More importantly, however, I plan on becoming a Quaker next fall because of the stellar biochemistry program offered in the College of Arts & Sciences, along with the wealth of interesting academic opportunities outside of the classroom.
As I begin my pursuit of a career in medicine, I would like to earn an individualized major in biochemistry, a topic that has greatly fascinated me. I love biology for its ability to pick nature apart, analyze the pieces, and teach about the world. It doesn’t just offer scientific knowledge; it presents an all-encompassing journey. From the Precambrian to Phanerozoic eon, microscopic cells to macroscopic biomes, biology brings the banalities and anomalies of the world together, and that’s why I have fallen for its natural charm. I remember initially feeling overwhelmed with the complexity of the topic; however, once I began to understand the research, I felt fortunate to be a part of it. My experience at Oakland taught me that hands-on operations suit my learning approach, and for this reason, I want to contribute to the Penn research community. This thriving network of students and teachers is committed to research and interactive learning—just as I am. Moreover, my research experience gives me the tools to successfully navigate through my own research project in the individualized major program. Rarely are students afforded these types of opportunities to exhibit independence and creativity; at Penn, I intend to bridge the biology and chemistry disciplines to craft an original, innovative research
