Billie Holiday, born Eleanora Fagan, was an American Jazz singer and songwriter during the 1930’s and 1950’s; until her tragic death on July 17th, 1959 at the age of forty-four due to a heroin overdose. Billie Holiday initiated a new way of forming phrases and tempo in Jazz music. Billie’s vocal style also influenced the development of Pop singing. Billie Holiday is a part of the many prominent artist in the Jazz genre.
Billie Holiday was born on April 7th, 1915 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, however, Holiday was raised in Harlem, New York in the care of her relatives. She began recording numerous hits that were featured on Billboard Top Songs. One of which named, Embrance You, landed into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2005. The remaining years of Billie Holiday’s social life began to spiral downward. From the thousands of dollars she would make from her performances, she would buy heroin to contribute to her addiction.
As a result of this, Billie had a decline in her health. In 1956, her autobiography, Lady Sings The Blues, was released starring Dianna Ross as herself. On May 25, 1959 she gave her final performance in New York. Shortly after she was admitted into a hospital for heart problems and was so heavily addicted to heroin that she was arrested in the hospital for drug possessions. Two months later, Holiday died from alcohol and drug-related drawbacks.
Billie Holiday is remembered for her intrinsic and innovational style of singing during a time where it was uncommon. Even without the proper education, she was able to achieve a successful life and touched the lives of many people through her music. Billie Holiday will be remembered as an important aspect of music that has contributed into the evolution of music we hear
