The job of a teacher is to guide each student in their individual journey of education and to build them up so the student can attain the goal of having a successful life. This task is even more important for bilingual education teachers who teach not only different subject matter, but also teach English as a second language to their students. Unfortunately, bilingual education teachers are facing challenges that are unnecessary. These challenges are hindering their teaching, and they eventually hamper the students’ learning. The curriculum used in schools is one of the most crucial parts of a child’s education, and is even more important for bilingual education because the materials should match both the age and skill level of the child in both languages (Brisk and Proctor). Due to a fear of limited marketability, textbook publishers have not developed curriculums for bilingual education, and this cause the bilingual education teacher to take more time out of their already tight schedule to look for materials to use with the children (Cárdenas). This remarkable skill of bilingualism will generously aid the student with a unique advantage when taking a variety of standardized tests, such as the Scholarly Aptitude Test or the American College Test (The Benefits of Second Language Learning). The research team of Margaret Bruck, Wallace E. Lambert, and Richard Tucker from their book, Bilingual Schooling through the Elementary Grades: the St. Lambert Project at Grade Seven, has found that, “People who are competent in more than one language consistently outscore monolinguals on tests of verbal and nonverbal intelligence” (The Benefits of Second Language Study).
