There are a lot of characters in the Hobbit. Most if not all of them have some sort of weakness. Either a mental weakness, or physical weakness. For example characters like the Elvenking ,Bombur, and Thorin have a weakness and many others do too. But this essay will be focused on the weaknesses of these three characters Bilbo,Gollum and Smaug. With that said lets state the weaknesses of Bilbo first. Some weaknesses of Bilbo are that he doesn't know how to swim,he did not have courage at first and was very inexperienced. In the first couple of chapter Bilbo was very naïve. Gollum never really got over his bad planing either. As evident in Lord of the Ring he is still the same old Gollum. Overall Gollum has not changed at all. Some weaknesses of Smaug are that he has a soft on his chest area, and he is too curious for his own good.This is evident when bilbo comments on the large hollow patch on the left side of his chest. Another example is when he was killed by getting hit with a arrow in the hollow patch. Evidence that he is too curious is when instead of burning Bilbo and his companions. He knew where he was because he could smell and hear him. He asked for his name and had a conversation with him and even laughed at Bilbo. He also gave Bilbo time to come back take more treasure. How does Smaug overcome his weaknesses? He does not. He was created with the soft spot so there was nothing he could do about. Because of this weakness he had died a gruesome death. How did he not get over his weakness of curiosity. He did not because he died before he could even correct his errors.
