“Hard times don't create heroes. It is during the hard times when the 'hero' within us is revealed”-Bob Riley. In the book “The Hobbit” written by J.R.R Tolkien, Bilbo Baggins, the main character emerges as a hero. “The Hobbit” is the story about a hobbit that is picked as a burglar to go on an adventure to the lonely mountains, to reclaim a stolen treasure. Along the way he has to battle everything from spiders to elves. Bilbo proves to be a hero throughout the story because of the things he does when faced with danger, and the outcome of them. Throughout “the Hobbit” Bilbo becomes more confident in himself, respected by people higher up and out smarts people to protect himself.
First, During Bilbo’s adventure he becomes more confident in himself. Bilbo was able to kill his first spider, because of that he felt like he accomplished something. After Bilbo killed the spider it says “the spider lay dead beside him, and his sword blade was stained black. Somehow the killing of the giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark without the help of the wizard or the dwarfs or of anyone else, made a great difference to Mr Baggins. Bilbo was able to outsmart Gollum, for that he was able to get out of the cave. In the passage it says “With a spring Gollum got up and started shambling off at a great pace. Bilbo hurried after him, still cautiously, though his chief fear now was tripping on another snag and falling with a noise…it seemed the ring he had was a magic ring: it made you invisible!” (85). Bilbo was able to escape Gollum’s cave unharmed. Bilbo finds out what power the ring has, so he uses it to his advantage. Because of the rings power, Bilbo was able to follow Gollum out of the cave.
