Most movies can be grouped with other similar movies. These groupings are what we know today to be genres. One of the major genres of film would be science fiction. However, science fictions movies tend to have such a wide variety of convention. For example, there are the classic space expedition films or the humans versus robots films, and even post-apocalyptic films to name a few sub-genres. Among these many conventions, the one overlapping convention would be the implementation of advanced or futuristic technology in the film as well as the heavy usage of sound effects. The films The Martian, Big Hero 6, and Ex Machina are all science-fiction films with a heavy foundation in science but still hold their own differences.

Hiro, the main character, and his robot, Baymax, want to catch the murderer of Hiro’s brother Tadashi. Hiro and Baymax suffer many losses and eventually prevail with a “happy ending”. In this film, robots are being used to fight each other for money as well as gaining scholarships. This movie centers on the inventions of Tadashi and Hiro which both do not exist in the current technological era. The sound conventions in this film are also similar to those in The Martian where the some sounds have to be created due to there not being a known sound in reality. The main character, Caleb, is a computer coder who is invited to his boss’s house to help test the capabilities of an AI the boss, Nathan, created. The AI, Ava, is shown as a robot with the face of a human. As the plot progresses, Ava begins to seem more humanlike and the fine line separating human from machine is slowly destroyed. High intelligence AI and the technology in Nathan’s house are two examples of advanced technology. When it comes to films most people think that the filmmakers just draft up the script, hires some actors, films and edits some scenes, then releases the next number one movie in America to the world (or select theaters near you). In actuality, there are a lot more details that go into film than that. Filmmakers are constantly making decisions in regards to a films narrative and cinematic style and making sure a film comes out as well as it can. The use of sound helped to create a story behind the scenes. The sounds of Drum’s gunfire and Ouiser’s dog barking create a humorous event outside of the set. This scene of family/neighborhood craziness is relatable to any audience member in some way and helped the audience to connect with the characters. Due to the marvel of sound the audience can pick out that the whistling is related to the murderer. Along with the blind man who figured this mystery out, the audience could only put these two together with this sound technique. The director shows the audience how such a simple part of every day sound can be so important to solving such a terrible crime.

As an audience we are manipulated from the moment a film begins. In this essay I wish to explore how The Conversation’s use of sound design has directly controlled our perceptions and emotional responses as well as how it can change the meaning of the image. I would also like to discover how the soundtrack guides the audience’s attention with the use of diegetic and nondiegetic sounds.
You know when you’re watching a movie and you really connect with it, not just with the characters but you really just get the film? Ever wonder what it is that made you fall in love with a film even if the dialogue or cinematography isn’t everything you hoped for? It’s the sound design! Not to discredit any part of the film, The Pursuit of Happyness, because it is a beautiful film, but the sound design is what truly makes this film so great. It fills all the voids that are sometimes experienced in films. It does this by capitalizing on what the untrained ear calls noise. Another way the sound designers of this film really grab the attention of the audience is by creating a fluid way to make you listen to the sounds simultaneously with the images on the screen. In addition, the realistic sounds in conjunction with synthetic sounds complete the film by providing seamless cuts between scenes. The amalgamations of these three aspects are what make the sound design of The Pursuit of Happyness a truly vital part of the film.
