(2003, the author shares her thoughts on the ongoing phenomenon of racism and the reason for its continued presence in today’s America. Although one would think that with several racially profiled criminal cases and highly televised trials in history, along with clearly segregated political rallies, segregated neighborhoods and community institutions such as schools and banks and churches, there are still people who are not aware of the existence of racism today.

They may not realize it, but they are wrong. In 2014 a white police officer shot and killed an unarmed black teen named Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. This story swept America by its feet and brought on a new worldwide discussion of racism. In 2012 George Zimmerman fatally shot and killed Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old African American high school student in Sanford Florida, he was also unarmed. In an article by CNN, I read about several psychologist who staged an experiment that brought out the truth in societies racial bias. “They showed people a photograph of two white men fighting, one unarmed and another holding a knife. Then they showed another photograph, this one of a white man with a knife fighting an unarmed African-American man. When they asked people to identify the man who was armed in the first picture, most people picked the right one. Yet when they were asked the same question about the second photo, most people -- black and white -- incorrectly said the black man had the knife(“The new threat: 'Racism without racists”).”There are six times more Black people incarcerated than whites and every day, and a black-name resume is 50 percent less likely to get responded to than a white-name resume” (“This one video shows how racism is real in America”). This ties into the reason why most blacks live in poverty and have low income jobs which later result in their kids
From beginning to end the reader is bombarded with all kinds of racism and discrimination described in horrific detail by the author. His move from Virginia to Indiana opened a door to endless threats of violence and ridicule directed towards him because of his racial background. For example, Williams encountered a form of racism known as modern racism as a student at Garfield Elementary School. He was up to win an academic achievement prize, yet had no way of actually winning the award because ?The prize did not go to Negroes. Just like in Louisville, there were things and places for whites only? (Williams, 126). This form of prejudice is known as modern racism because the prejudice surfaces in a subtle, safe and socially acceptable way that is easy to rationalize.
Even though slavery was abolished Jim Crow laws were made illegal years ago, racism is still not gone, and this is Bonilla-Silva’s central argument in his book, “Racism Without Racists.” While racist practices are not as overt nowadays, the covert, institutionalized ways of today’s new racism are just as discriminatory, he argues. One particular sentence that stood out that sums up the first part of his argument is “that the main problem nowadays is not the folks with hoods, but the folks dressed in suits.” Because of this switch to a more covert way of discriminating against people of color, white Americans have become color-blind to racism. In turn, the country is now home to “racism without racists,” which is the second part of the author’s argument. Because racism has become so internalized in our institutions, it can sometimes be hard to recognize, or at least admit to, the discrimination that is so prevalent in the U.S. Because whites either don’t recognize or admit to this racism, they claim that they don’t see color, and that any inequalities that are at play are due to the minorities not working hard enough in our meritocracy.
Tatum’s book “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” (1997) analyses the development of racial identity and the influence of racism in American’s culture. She emphasizes the Black-White interactions by comparing the terminology in which racism perceived based on David Wellman’s definition of racism. Tatum also believes racism is not one person in particular but is a cultural situation in which ethnicity assigns some groups significantly privileged compared to others. She illustrates how engaging children in terms of interracial understanding will empower them to respond to racial stereotypes and systems of discrimination.
Race has been a difficult topic to discuss and grasp ever since race problems began. This type of racism is found in many places which include schools, court of laws, job places and governmental organizations. Institutionalized racism affects many factors in the lives of African Americans, including the way they may interact with white individuals. In the book “Drinking Coffee Elsewhere Stories” ZZ Packer uses her short stories to emphasize the how institutionalized racism plays in the lives of the characters in her stories. Will this dilemma come to a halt? Can all Americans see each other as equals despite their skin color and nationality; and what role has it played in past generations versus today’s generations and how will it affect our future? In the article, “On Racist Speech,” author Charles R. Lawrence III discusses factors pertaining to racism and how it influences our daily lives negatively. Lawrence grew up through the stages of segregation and was able to watch our nation grow to what it is now. The topic that is brought to question is, do we really live in a truly integrated and equal country? Segregation is not only an issue of the past, but continues to be a problem in modern day. To diffuse our nation of hate speech, we must stand together and face the issues that we have created.
The world has lived through generations of racism and racial profiling. After the days of Martin Luther King Jr. and the Black Civil Rights Movement, the American people thought they had passed the days of hatred and discrimination. Although Americans think that they live in a non-racist society, minorities today still live in the chains of oppression and prejudice through sports, schools, and social media.
Racism and prejudice has been present in almost every civilization and society throughout history. Even though the world has progressed greatly in the last couple of decades, both socially and technologically, racism, hatred and prejudice still exists today, deeply embedded in old-fashioned, narrow-minded traditions and values.
