Introduction In William Shakespeare’s play, ‘Hamlet’, there is a recurring theme of betrayal as the story unfolds. Betrayal is shown to the audience constantly and William Shakespeare is showing the lack of trust build between the relationships of these characters. Hamlet’s family was torn apart by the death of King Hamlet, causing rivalries within the family and its friends. Shakespeare’s characters committed acts of betrayal throughout the play as they tried to harm people that should have been treated as family and life partners. People became spies, couples separated, and death was imminent due to the treachery of these characters. This act was done out of greed and jealousy of his brother. Instead of being the ideal brother and supporting King Hamlet, he killed him in his sleep with poison. Claudius stole everything from his brother including his kingdom and wife. When the Ghost of King Hamlet said, “Murder most foul, as in best it is”(1.5.27), he meant that Claudius’ betrayal towards his own brother is the worst sin of all. Shakespeare understood the dispute of power that occurs frequently between brothers and displayed one of the tragic outcomes that happen even in the world today. After Claudius took the the throne and married Gertrude, he became suspicious of Hamlet’s actions. He used Hamlet’s closest friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, to spy on Hamlet. Throughout the play, Claudius acted like he cared for his step-son but it is evident that he wanted to kill Hamlet to protect his position and hide the truth. When Hamlet killed Claudius’ chief counselor, Polonius, Claudius told Hamlet to go to England to cure his madness.
