What does it mean to be a hero? A hero is someone who goes on distant journeys, goes through life-and-death struggles between good and evil, and embodies the ideals of his people. In the epic poem, Beowulf fights with three different monsters using different techniques and weapons that reward different trophies. Beowulf is a warrior who fights with purpose. Beowulf’s first battle was in Herot against Grendel, in which he used his bare hands to defeat the monster. In the story it says…“Grendel’s claws went back as Beowulf leaned up on one arm”(Beowulf, p.56). Beowulf could not use his sword on Grendel so he had to resort to his brute strength to defeat the monster. In Beowulf it says that…”He twisted in pain, and the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder snapped, muscle and bone split and broke”(Beowulf, p.58). This shows how badly Grendel was wounded by Beowulf during their battle. In the epic poem it also says…”From the rafters where …show more content…

In the book it says…”Beowulf rose, still brave, still strong”(Beowulf, p.68). This shows how brave and courageous Beowulf was, not shaken of his goal or purpose of fighting. In Beowulf it states…”a steaming cloud pouring from the stone, then the earth itself shook”(Beowulf, p.69). This is describing how scorching hot the dragons fiery breathe was. In the epic poem Beowulf it also says…”For this, this gold, these jewels, I thank our father in Heaven, Ruler of the Earth- For all of this, that His grace has given me, Allowed me to bring to my people while breath still come to my lips”(Beowulf, p.74). Beowulf was thankful for defeating the dragon and winning the gold, so that he can bring it back to his people. He gives God all the praise for him being able to do this.
