After reading the epic poem Beowulf and watching the movie The 13th Warrior, I find that the differences greatly outnumber the similarities. However, the theme of good versus evil reflects the values of the Anglo-Saxon people in both the poem and the movie. Numerous differences exist in the poem and the movie including the characters, the bloody battles, and the deaths of the heroes.
Many differences occur in the poem and movie. The difference in the heroes names becomes obvious. In the poem the heroes name is Beowulf. In the movie, Boulvine is the hero’s name. Another difference occurs in the monsters. In the poem the head monsters name is Grendle. In the movie though, the monster is called the leader of the Ven. Also, in the poem,
The differences and similarities between the traditional version of the Epic Beowulf and the modern version, Beowulf and Grendel, makes passages for characters such as Grendel to be changed due to the time frame in between the film and the epic.There are several characters that stood out from the film, as they are portrayed in the epic as something completely different than in the movie. As a child I was taught that Columbus was a great man that had accomplished great things for the sake of humanity, but in reality his agenda was not to better humanity but to better himself. He found the Americas by mere chance and he did not even know of what he found. We give him credit for "finding" the Americas but history tells of the people, that he called Indians, already inhabiting the foreign land. So you decide whether or not Christopher Columbus should be revered a hero.

Many different works of literature are later remade into a visual piece. The visual versions, however, do not usually tell the story the same as exact as their written counterparts. In the case of the epic poem, Beowulf, this is also true. There are many similarities between the movie and the poem, and there are also many differences.
In Beowulf, the protagonist Beowulf is shown as a hero with extrodinary strength. This is not what makes him a hero. By definition, a hero is a man of exceptional quality. However this term does not do Beowulf justice. His self-imposed purpose in life is to help others, and eventually sacrifices his own life in doing so. Beowulf’s battle with the dragon serves as a critique of the notion that Beowulf is a hero. The Dragon section displays many of Beowulf’s heoric characteristics. Beowulf establishes himself as a hero by fighting the dragon, exemplifing strength and courage when fighting the dragon, and sacrificing himself so that others can live.

Although her reason was never stated in the story, one can safely assume that Miss Emily was happy lying in the arms of her dead lover. Both Faulkner and Poe show us in their stories that even if there are different characters, points of views or reasons for killing a loved one, there are still similarities.

There are many differences between Beowulf the movie and Beowulf the book. However, there are some minor similarities in the two. Most of the time, the movie is completely different than the book. In the movie version of the book, they put events that watchers would find intriguing rather than facts that are not really important to the plot of the book. Movie producers will sometimes add details to make the movie more interesting. There is no feasible way for a movie producer to fit the whole book into a two hour movie and add the extra details to make the movie more interesting.
The 13th Warrior is told on the viewpoint of Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan. In the epic poem the story is told from Beowulf`s point of view. The movie explains the risk the warriors went through in the battle. It shows Ahmed saving two kids who were running from the attack and his big heart for those who were suffering. The film shows the better side of Beowulf, the more gentleman side. It shows Beowulf fighting to protect people. The characters in the film and the poem have totally different personalities and do all the task in a different ways. Throughout The 13th Warrior and Beowulf the warriors show off their attributes and physical talents. Have you read or watched “Beowulf?” The textbook version and the movie are different in many ways, but are also similar. There are a lot of action, sad, and joyful scenes involved in both. “Beowulf” contains a bad guy and a good guy, just like any other movie/book does. It is very interesting and you will not have to fight to stay focused because your attention definitely will be kept.
