Beowulf Compared To A Modern Day Hero

The character of Beowulf in British Literature shares similar characteristics with modern

day heroes such as members of U.S military, in that both heroes fight for good against evil, and

both possess the strength and courage to battle against the enemy.

In the epic poem of “Beowulf”, the protagonist of this story, Beowulf, can be compared to a modern day hero because he battles good and evil. As seen in this story, Beowulf can potentially exemplify the good because he acts selflessly by leaving his homeland and is willing to risk his life to protect others. The three monsters that Beowulf fights; Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon, are representations of evil. In this poem, Grendel is being symbolized as evil. This great poem describes Grendel as “a fiend out of hell, began to work his evil in the world” (Beowulf 43). Military need incredible strength to fight. Beowulf is described as being huge and strong “with the strength of thirty in the grip of each hand” (Beowulf 49). Throughout the story, Beowulf is shown to have superhuman strength which is greatly seen in the battle with Grendel. Not only did he fight with only his bare hands and does not have an armor on but he even managed to rip Grendel’s arm right out of the socket. The second example is shown when he fights Grendel’s mother. He kills her with a giant-forged sword in which the poet describes it as “so huge and heavy of itself that only Beowulf could wield it in a battle” (Beowulf 75). Beowulf had the strength to lift it off the wall and he also had the strength to lift it and swing hard enough to cut off Grendel’s mothers head. Finally, even in his old age, Beowulf shows strength when he wants to fight the dragon by himself. In the end, he and Wiglaf defeat the dragon but Beowulf ends up being mortally
