Many people grow up with a sibling, in fact eighty percent of people in the United States and Europe grow up with a brother or sister (Dunn 1). Most people can agree with the statement that growing up with siblings has impacted their development and personality. This topic has been researched by psychologist and sociologist for decades; which has provided both positive and negative outcomes of growing up with siblings. Children can benefit from growing up with siblings because they can learn from their siblings, gain social skills, and their siblings may become a valuable asset in one’s life. One of the reasons growing up with siblings can benefit children is because they can learn from their siblings in multiple ways. Children can indirectly learn from their siblings by recognising their mistakes and avoid making the same ones. This helps the other siblings because they will have a greater chance of not making the same mistake and save their time, so they can focus on other things. They can provide a source for learning from their mistakes or learning from them in general. Especially older siblings, they can give advice and assist with homework. Having a sibling helps children develop their social skills and makes it an easier transition when they go to school. Siblings can also be an important figure in kids’ lives because they can double as a friend, and a person they can rely on for support.
