Ambitious. Goal-oriented. Misunderstood. When someone has a dream but their family doubts it, they still do anything in their power to achieve it. A Raisin in the Sun, a play by Lorraine Hansberry, tells the story of an African American family in the 1950s trying to live with the society at the time. Beneatha Younger, daughter to Lena Younger and sister to Walter Younger, is a college student in her twenties living in Chicago with her vast household. She struggles throughout the story with her family not respecting her as an adult, figuring out her ancestor’s heritage, and finding a man to marry at some point in her future. For example, Beneatha does not believe in God. When she expresses her opinion to her mother, Lena, and her sister in law, Ruth, her mother slaps her across the face and forced to repeat a phrase; “Now- you say after me, in my mother’s house there is still God”(50). Another example would be when Walter told her she was ungrateful for everything everyone in that house did for her, even though she had said she was very grateful during their argument, and even got on her knees in front of Walter, saying how grateful she was; “Well - I do - all right?- thank everybody! And forgive me for ever wanting to be anything at all! FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME!”(37). Her family, also, believes that she has irresponsible tendencies because she has started many hobbies, but never really continued with them. In reality, Beneatha just happens to be making the most out of her life by trying new things whenever she has the opportunity. An example would be her dream of becoming a doctor. Although her family and society do not really encourage it as it does not fit into the stereotype, she still intends to becoming a doctor. This shows that even though she does not have the support she may need to get through college to get her degree, she still keeps her mind set on her goal. Another way that Beneatha has ambition is when she wants to find out her family’s ancestry. She does anything she can to figure out what her family was like when they were back in Africa and not in the United States. She asks a guy she met in college named Joseph Asagai, a friend of Beneatha’s from college, to help her out on her quest to find out this information.
