In this novel Roxanne is a famous soprano opera singer from Chicago. Bel Canto, one of the main characters that I chose to study was Roxane Coss. Roxanne is a famous soprano opera singer from Chicago.
I chose her because I believe that she is one of few main characters who made the biggest change of values throughout the novel. The tenor/vehicle that I used for Roxane is “A diva is a jeweled scarf, rich yet soft and flowing”. I chose a diva for my tenor because that sums up Roxane’s personality as a character throughout the novel. I chose the jeweled scarf with birds on it because it gives the readers a physical object that is used as an insight on her character. Roxane went through many changes in her values. She conveyed her three values of image, peace and love throughout the novel. She started off by being a self-centered diva, to facing a big reality check.
Roxane conveyed her value of her image in the opening scene of the novel. In the beginning, it shows how Roxane was very self-centered, and didn’t care about anyone’s feelings but her selves. ...he whole novel, but she really showed it in the epilogue. This ending scene was a shocker to all of the readers. The reason for this is because an epilogue is usually put in a novel to wrap things up. In this case it left a lot of questions unanswered. Even though the epilogue was a shocker for most readers, it still shows that Roxanne made a dramatic change within herself by the end of the book. In the beginning of the book it only showed that Roxanne valued her own image. Now that the book has come to an end it now shows that she values peace and love. This ending scene compares to the Soap Opera symbol. Soap Operas symbolize art’s power of unification. Art connects people by expressing shared feelings of love and loss. Gen and Roxane are connected through marriage to express their shared feelings of their love for each other and the loss of their deceased lovers.
