Citizenship is the state of being trusted with rights, privileges, and duties. Being a citizen of the United States of America means to take part in the nations events. An example from history that shows the citizens of America fighting for their rights would be the American Revolution. The people of early America believed the King of England was not treating them fairly and wanted to fight for independence. A privilege can be found in everyday life. For example, it is a privilege to be able to wake up every morning and have the water to take a shower or to be hungry and know that there is food in the kitchen to eat. This is usually given to people who need extra help or that have done an amazing this in the eyes of our society. For example, a handicapped person receives a tag they can hang from the rearview mirror of their car so they can park in the designated parking spots closer to the building. Another example would be the discounts that many police officers, firefighters, and military soldiers receive at different stores or restaurants is a privilege they earned through fighting for their country. Being a citizen of the United States is a privilege because we are given the freedom to do anything we like as long as it is within the laws. Those laws are placed to keep the people of America safe and in control. In the past, Cuba was ruled under a dictator named Fidel Castro. This country was not given the freedom that the people of America were given. Many of the Cuban people’s human rights were taken away from them forcing them to live in fear and terror. Recently, Cuba was taken out from under that dictatorship and is now a democracy. In a democracy the people of the society need to trust the loyalty of the government and the government needs to trust the loyalty of the people. As a result, Fidel Castro, a communist revolutionary political man, began to plot Batista’s downfall. The Cuban Revolution, also known as Castro’s Revolution, began on July 26, 1952, and ended January, 1, 1959. After Batista, Cuba’s former president, fled the country, Castro took complete control and turned Cuba into a communist country. The Revolution brought upon: many deaths, censored news and publicity, and no freedom of speech. Throughout the years Castro stayed in power, but due to health issues originating on July 31, 2006, he had to step down. After Castro returned, he took control of Cuba up until February 19, 2008. He then abdicated his place as dictator and handed down his position to his brother, Raul Castro.
