Throughout my life I have had struggles communicating to other individuals, because instead of having a normal conversation with another person, it seems I am only part of that to be a listener. When I started thinking about this topic I realized that the fault didn’t lay on the other person but on me for not being able to express my experiences in the simple way other do. It is a fact that not everyone knows how to communicate, and to this properly, there are many factors that go in that need to be learned. Carol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D. and author of The Nonverbal Advantage: Secrets and Science of Body Language at Work writes an article for Forbes entitled Great Leaders Talk with their Hands. In this article Goman tells us this “Have you ever noticed that when people are passionate about what they’re saying, their gestures automatically become more animated? Their hands and arms move about, emphasizing points and conveying enthusiasm”. I notice this is very true stamen people tend to overreact to anything they are passionate about and use huge gestures that always seem to match that same enthusiasm they have for that thing or activity. However it seems that when speak to other individuals we completely ignore what their clearly saying with their body language. I believe this can be attributed to people wanting to express their own passions and beliefs to others they forget that they are suppose to converse with one another and not try to dominate the other person. This is an important trait to learn in order to become an effective listener and an even better conversationalist. The Importance of Listening for Professional and Personal Relationships Listening is essential for communication, yet is a skill in which most are lacking. Though we are listening constantly, knowing what to listen to requires an enormous amount of discipline and practice, which is vital for communicating effectively. As a blue collar worker I can tell you that we are often preoccupied with our thoughts trying to solve problems. Sometimes all we can do is a simple hand gesture. So we’ve learned to understand different gestures in their context, whether it’s “bring me that…”, “hold this”, “help me”, etc. With so much diversity in the workforce it often became the only form of communication we had. For regardless of what language barriers may exist between us, a hand wave is a universally understood symbol of “hello”. Thus my view on gestures and body language changed. .... Through the evaluation of reactions from both myself and others, I have realized the significant impact the misuse of a particular listening style may have. These effects reach beyond social and professional environments, and in some cases may produce unintended negative effects with family. I had not realized that the two listening styles I use most commonly could be so incredibly polarized when it comes to employing critical listening. As a result, I have devised appropriate steps which I feel will assist in creating a more balanced conversational environment and improve my overall effectiveness in communication. I was surprised to discover that my listening styles are not always conducive to the environment in which I am listening; however, I am consequently compelled to take the steps necessary to achieve higher-quality communication in every aspect of life.
Introduction When responding to others, we must be aware about how we address people as well as we respond to their questions. Over the past few days, I have been able to reflect on my listening skills; both strengths and weaknesses. Although I do have some strong points as a listener, there are several areas I need to improve on. Upon reflection, I was also able to create a number of goals I have for working on these skills over the semester and continuing these after the conclusion of the class.

To be effective listeners, the listening process should be incorporated into our lives. We should be attentive to what people say, clarify what the speaker is trying to come across, and respond in a way the speaker can understand what we are saying. I think I was aware that I needed some improvement in certain areas of this process but I feel as everything is slowly changing. In the future, I’m going try not to interrupt people, get distracted, tune out, and try to get a bigger picture of what the person is telling me. If good listening habits are applied in our day-to-day life, we can easily communicate with anyone and everyone.

The skill of listening is a skill that I believe everyone should have but most people lack. Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability in which individuals experience difficulty in performing language-related tasks such as word recognition or reading, writing, spelling, reading comprehension, and sometimes speaking (Washburn, Binks‐Cantrell, & Joshi, 2014; Shaywitz et al., 2004; Snowling, 2009). However, people with dyslexia is still able to understand complex ideas provided they are given sufficient time to work through the information. According to Lapkin (2004), it may also be useful if people with dyslexia are actually provided with an alternative way to process information, for instance, to be given the option to listen to an audiobook instead of reading it.
