SACRAMENTO, C.A. – Steven P. Unger spoke on Thursday afternoon about his popular book “Before the Paparazzi: 50 Years of Extraordinary Pictures”, which features a nostalgic outlook on America.
A turnout of over 50 satisfied students and fans attended co-author Unger’s lecture, watching a slide-show on previews of the book’s pages and Arty Pomerantiz’s famous photos from the 1960s.
“Pomerantz captured the raw truth of American history that was not touched up or photo-shopped—it was real and unique,” said student Vivian Chu.

Unger’s lecture explained how each photo represents stories of experiences, experiences shown clearly through Pomerantz’s camera lens.
Unger showed pictures of a variety of people Pomerantz photographed, from presidents to celebrities, and musicians to a mob chief.
One of Pomerantz’s famous pieces, “The Last Second in the Life of a Suicide”, was previously nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Pomerantz was able to shoot the man as he let go of the bridge.
Unger explained how Pomerantz was a skilled photographer who has artwork in many newspapers and magazines across the world.
Pomerantz’s picture of a dead mob chief became the cover photo of the New York Post, which was also illustrated in an episode of The Sopranos.
“Arty Pomerantz captured generations of movie stars and normal citizens—like you and me! He shot photos of real events and genuine happiness, which is hard to find in today’s generation of photographs,” said student Nathan

David Berkowitz unleashed his random malicious scats during the summer of 1976. He is known today as one of New York’s most notorious serial killers. Berkowitz was born on June 1st, 1953 in New York, New York. He was adopted by the Berkowitz couple a few days after his birth. When Berkowitz was 18 the joined the U.S. Army. After the army, he got a job as a security officer and moved into an apartment in New York. No one even noticed the danger that slept next door.

Being a silent third party to a father screaming at his seven-year-old daughter for putting the inner tube in the wrong place. People watching has for a long time been one of my favorite activities as a third party you are able to see people for what they are, unbiased by already having known the person. Eugene Richards’s book has made me look at my hobby from an artistic vantage point. He’s made me start to think that one day I would like to be one behind a telephoto lens, capturing those moments that people don’t think anyone else saw. Richards photographs have made me realise that photography is more than a point a shoot process.
I glance amusedly at the photo placed before me. The bright and smiling faces of my family stare back me, their expressions depicting complete happiness. My mind drifted back to the events of the day that the photo was taken. It was Memorial Day and so, in the spirit of tradition my large extended family had gathered at the grave of my great grandparents. The day was hot and I had begged my mother to let me join my friends at the pool. However, my mother had refused. Inconsolable, I spent most of the day moping about sulkily. The time came for a group picture and so my grandmother arranged us all just so and then turned to me saying, "You'd better smile Emma or you'll look back at this and never forgive yourself." Eager to please and knowing she would never let it go if I didn't, I plastered on a dazzling smile. One might say a picture is worth a thousand words. However, who is to say they are the accurate or right words? During the 1930s, photographers were hired by the FSA to photograph the events of the Great Depression. These photographers used their images, posed or accurate, to sway public opinion concerning the era. Their work displayed an attempt to fulfill the need to document what was taking place and the desire to influence what needed to be done.
A turning point in Rockwell’s career occurred one year later when he sold five cover illustrations to George Lorimer, editor of the “Saturday Evening Post”. For the next four decades, Rockwell’s name would be synonymous with the “Post”. During that time he produced 322 covers for the magazine.

On a lonely street in the Bronx, Berkowitz approached a couple sitting in a parked car. He then proceeded to shoot Valentina Suriani and Alexander Esau twice, killing Suriani instantly. Esau was rushed to the hospital, but later died from extensive injuries to the head (Grieg 22). Afterwards at the crime scene, near the victims’ bodies, police recovered a letter addressed to Joseph Borelli, the captain of the NYPD (Biography). In the letter, Berkowitz states, “I love to hunt. Prowling the streets looking for fair game – tasty meat. The wemon of Queens are z prettyist of all. I must be the water they drink. I live for the hunt – my life. Blood for Papa.” (qtd. in Grieg 22). As Berkowitz committed his murders, many callous letters were located near the victims’ bodies, taunting the police and eluding capture (Biography). There you are holding your camera an arm’s length away from your face, posing in the most flattering position to capture your best angle. There you are taking a photo of yourself to share with all of your Facebook friends. Taking a self-portrait photo, also known as a selfie, is something almost everyone has done in this new generation. This action is typically done without a second thought. In Alex Williams’ article “Here I Am Taking My Own Picture” that second thought is provoked through exploring the quickly spreading trend of self-portrait photography. In the article while Williams’ provides interesting examples on a changing generation as this trend progresses through social media and modern technology; Williams also leaves something to be desired within the article due to a lack of direction in the author’s stance on the topic.

Driving big cars, living in mansions and having attendants to attend to various needs all seem to be something to make life easy and comfortable. Photojournalism plays a critical role in the way we capture and understand the reality of a particular moment in time. As a way of documenting history, the ability to create meaning through images contributes to a transparent media through exacting the truth of a moment. By capturing the surreal world and presenting it in a narrative that is relatable to its audience, allows the image to create a fair and accurate representation of reality.
