Electrician Becoming an electrician does not require a lot of schooling, but is a great occupation to pursue. High school diploma is most important, once you get that out of the way you have two routes you can choose to go. The first is committing to a two year technical school that has electrical technology. The other is doing on the job training, but most employers look for some type of technical schooling so the better route is to go to a technical college and learn the basics of the job. As stated by an current electrician Alan Barnes, “I believe that a vocational technical trade school is essential in my line of work.” Basics of the job include learning how to install wiring for residential and industrial areas. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the skill set for being an electrician are, Business skills, color vision, critical-thinking skills, customer service skills, physical stamina, physical strength, and troubleshooting skills” (”Summary”). Before we get into the education of the occupation let’s talk about what you do as an electrician. Electricians install wiring and also maintain electrical systems. According to Electrician Authority website, “the exam also tests the applicant's knowledge of relevant laws and regulations pertaining to electrical work including codes important to their jurisdiction” (“How to become a journeyman”). The journeyman exam will allow you to be a fully licensed electrician. There is another advancement after becoming a journeyman. You can be a master electrician after about seven years of experience in the field. After your seven years you will qualify for the master exam. If you become a master electrician you really have an advantage of finding jobs, because a lot of companies are going to be looking for that master
