There are more and more jobs that require inside work now than ever; I do not want to do much work inside, if any. Since I was very young I never wanted to get a job that required me to be inside or sit at a desk all day. Working outside is the perfect thing for me. Even if I don’t become a lineman; I am going to work outside. Becoming a lineman is the perfect job for me I believe. Many people nowadays are beginning to realize that becoming a lineman may be a very good trade to get into. I know many people who aspire to be linemen. The people I know that want to become a lineman are one of the main influences in making my decision to become a lineman. My older brother is currently a student on the Clarion Venango campus. The most major downside is that if you get injured, you can not work outside. There would probably be some inside office work to do until you heal; but the outside work is the most desirable to me. Even if I was injured; I could use the break from outside work for a little while. Also this line of work can be physically straining to anyone who has not prepared for the type of work. I do not think the physical strain will affect me much at all. Another con is that once college and lineman school is finished, an apprenticeship is recommended. The duration of apprenticeships can be up to five years. Also, apprenticeships do not offer as much as regular lineman jobs do. Although a job directly out of high school is a very good opportunity to be ahead of the game. Although apprenticeships may be lower paying, it is better than going to college for four years and spending even more money. The nature of the work can also be very dangerous. Working on big telephone poles can be a threat to someone's well being for anyone who is not comfortable with heights. I am very comfortable at heights; which is one thing that helps me prepare for this job. Also electricity is very dangerous and can be life threatening. Another restraint to college athletes working is a time restraint. College athletes have very busy schedules they follow and when finished with their schedules they are left with very little free time. Student athletes are required to take a minimum of twelve credit hours to start the semester and required to pass at least nine credit hours by the end of the semester. With this standard having to be met, the athletes are spending hours studying and attending class. Besides from studying and attending class the athletes then have to go to practice. Going to practice and participating takes up about four to seven hours of the athlete’s day. After all of this is completed, the athletes are left with only a couple of hours for them to enjoy time with their friends or even to just relax and watch a movie. But, because these athletes are college students and do not receive any money for their commitments they are supposed to squeeze time in for work in. If athletes apply for a job they are limited to only a couple of hours a day to work. Also a large number of jobs request their employees to be available on the weekends.
In my 8 or so years of playing football I’ve often heard coaches liken the job of the linemen to that of a soldier fighting in a trench, pushing, attacking, and struggling for every inch of the battlefield that is the line of scrimmage. Of course, the job of a lineman is far less dramatic and glorious than that description makes it out to be, most of our job is just keeping the defense at bay so the quarterback and the rest of the backfield has time to get a play off. Unfortunately for us offensive linemen, the defense has a much larger bag of tricks when it comes to the actual clash, they can grab, pull, or simply spin by while the O-line is relegated mostly to pushing with shoulder and hand. College athletes have a goal that they pursue. The jump to the professional sports leagues is an accomplishment that most college athletes wanted to achieve. But most college athletes go to college and forego completing their senior year and don’t get a degree. In basketball most athletes are one and done. This means they go to college for only one year then enter the NBA draft. For the NFL players have to be out of high school for three years and necessarily don’t have to go to college.

There are many ups to this career and many downs. Some ups to this career is that I get to work with many unique kids and adults. I will see many different injuries. As I advance in the career field I will learn more about how to fix and treat the athlete’s injuries and what rehabilitation they can use to get well. I will also learn more ways to prevent injuries from happening like; shin splints, pulling a muscle or a tendon. If I ever feel this is not the career I want to have for the rest of my life I can always work in a hospital or a rehabilitation facility with my PhD. Some downs to this career is that there is a lot of lifting injured athletes. Sometimes there is a lot of gruesome injuries. Everyone has life experiences. Some can be new and fun, like the first time ever going to Disney World as a child. Meeting your favorite movie characters and seeing stories come to life. Other can be tragic, like losing a loved one or suffering a car crash. No matter the experience we all learn from them. I am here to tell you about an experience of mine that I went through at an early age. At the age of 15, I told my parents that I wanted to play football. The sport of football really changed my view on life and taught me that things don’t come easy and that if you really want something, you’re going to have to put in the time and work. One of the many experiences of being in the sport of football is that practice is one of the toughest things I’ve ever went through, physically and mentally. Football taught me a lot about team work and working with others on doing and executing a job. Football made me faster stronger smarter and wiser. As I was preparing to leave high school and look for a career, I had to make an immense decision. I had to decide what field I wanted to pursue, and how to go about it. I knew I wanted to teach because it offered everything I wanted in a profession including, good benefits, decent pay, the chance to work with children, and the chance to eventually coach High School Football. No other career I found can offer all of these advantages.
In my life, I had not had the chance to be a part of something that influenced me much, until I joined football my freshman year in high school. Joining football was perhaps the most devoted and wisest thing that I did because shortly after joining I began to see changes for the better, and from then I saw the person that I wanted to be in the future. In other words, it shaped the person that I am today and will be for the rest of my life. Not only did the sport influence me but it also equipped me with a new mindset that affects me today in my decision making skills, time management and many other beneficial life virtues. In today’s society, hard work seems to be forgotten, or merely just unrealistic. Whether it be in the work field or athletics, many get things simply handed to them. As I begin my final journey and the final four years of my softball career, I look back and reminisce on all the obstacles I have had to overcome throughout my softball journey. Colleges demand a well-rounded resume that students are trying to fulfill so they can get accepted to the college or university they desire most. “We know schools and families are embedded in society and are responding to its changing requirements and demands, with respect to the competitiveness to the college admissions process, the kinds of skills needed to succeed in the workforce, and even uncertainties in the global economy” (NYU Study Examines), in a study, students from a big university admit to finding that students are becoming more stressed out because of college pressures while still in high school. Colleges are trying to find the students that can succeed in both academics and extracurricular activities. Once students get into college, student athletes can buy a book written by Carl I. Fertman appropriately titled Student Athlete Success – Meeting the Challenges of College Life, to help organize their priorities with their busy schedule. This is a work book that allows the college athletes relate to other college athletes that feel the same way they do. College has its own set of challenges that high school students usually do not face, so this book would help the students cope with these new challenges. In the first section, there is a heading that is labeled “What Student-Athletes Say” with a list of common quotes from student athletes themselves. For example “Sometimes I feel like student athletes have extra pressure and greater expectations placed on them than other students. Everyone knows who we are and people are looking at us to catch us doing something wrong”. (2), which shows how students that do participate in sports feel as though they have added pressure because they are so well known in most cases. Being a college student alone can be stressful enough, but attending college while working a job can be quite stressful in some cases. College itself is not too bad and working a job typically isn 't ridiculous, but unfortunately most students have to attempt both if they wish to further their education. Usually students who juggle both are not doing it for fun. Attempting both at the same time, can become a very stressful life with lots of negative effects. There are two major negative effects of working while in college, however, there is one positive effect working while in college. The two adverse effects that most college students who work are dealing with is struggling to maintaining grades, with the possibility of dropping out and learning to function on a low amount of sleep. The one positive effect of working a job while in college is that the student becomes very prepared for the future.
