Around the world many young girls are being subjected to something that will tear them away from their childhoods: beauty pageants. Although many people believe that beauty pageants are harmless to children, they actually have many degrading effects. Beauty pageants need to have an age requirement put on them immediately. No one under the age of sixteen should be able to compete in a beauty pageant. This topic has been a great interest to be since the first time I watched Toddlers and Tiaras. I thought it was ridiculous how parents put their children through all the glitz and the glam when they are only a few months old. Some of these children weren’t even able to sit up by themselves. Many parents think that beauty pageants are just a harmless activity that their kids love to participate in. Child beauty pageants are beauty competitions that feature contestants aging 2 to 18 years of age (Child Beauty Pageant). The competition is usually composed of different categories, such as, talent, casual wear, evening wear, sportswear and question and answer portion (Child Beauty Pageant). Child contestants can wear makeup, showcase different hairstyles, and wear fitted outfits (Child Beauty Pageant). Child beauty pageants are very problematic. The major issue with them is that the children participating in them are too young to say no (5 Reasons). For example, when I was watching Toddlers and Tiaras I remember a three year old girl was terrified when her mother made her go to the tanning salon to get a spray tan. Beauty pageants should only be for girls sixteen years of age or older. Children under sixteen should not be worried about how they look and act. The addition of the age requirement for beauty pageant participants is going to be nothing but beneficial for the people of the United States. One of the benefits would be that parents will not have to worry about their children thinking that they are not beautiful enough.
