The Basset Hound is no taller than 14 inches however, with his huge paws, and hefty bone structure, he has unbelievable strength. They are known for their unique eyes, big heads and floppy ears. They also have a distinctive brow wrinkle. Because of his sensitive looking eyes, the Basset Hound can look sad and goofy. Originally bred in places like Belgium and France, Basset Hounds are a crossbreed of hunters. They, like the men who train them, aren't afraid to get muddy or to hunt a deer. You won't get him to confess his love for you the way other canines do, but he's loyal and will make a wonderful watchdog. When it comes to the Hound's health, you should check his ears regularly. They are long and droopy so they are prone to infection. Being out in the air could have an adverse effect on them. If he starts to scratch his ears or shake his head, you may need to take him to the vet. The Basset Hound could also have a long list of health problems including glaucoma, bleeding disorders, hip and elbow dysplasia and hypothyroidism.
