The History of Basketball

Basketball is a very entertaining sport, it is fun and at the same time challenging. It involves good physical skill and good mental skill. For some people basketball isn’t a sport it’s a living. Some of these people are known around the world such as Michel Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Labron James, and Kevin Durant and so on. These players are known for what they do and what they do is play basketball.
In the year 1891 basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith. When he worked at the Y.M.C.A as physical trainer he was given the task of providing an athletic distraction for a class by creating a game that would be entertaining and keep them occupied (Christopher M. Pg. 3). The purpose of the game was to keep them occupied thru the long harsh winters. The concept of basketball came from an old game called ‘’duck-on-a-rock” (www.kansasheritage.org). Before there were hoops the players used to shoot the ball into a peach basket.
The first official game of basketball took place January 20 1892, in the Springfield, Massachusetts Y.M.C.A training school (www.history.com) . Thought the years of basketball Naismith remained supportive to the development of his sport. He helped improve college basketball. When the Russian club Mayak played against a visiting Y.M.C.A team it was said to be the first international basketball game (Murray P pg.10p). In 1910 the NCAA was created to rival other associations for control over the rules of the game.World War I allowed basketball to spread to different parts of the world (Murray P. pg. 16).
In 1919 the very first international basketball tournament was held. “The Inter-Allied games wereheld in Paris” ...
