Direct Commission Aviator Application Narrative 01 October 2017 My commitment to duty and country stem from past generations of humbled service. My grandfather served over 20 years in the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy as a Commissioned Officer, and my father followed in his footsteps as a ROK Army Officer. They believed as I do in selfless service and pursuing a greater cause. My parents immigrated to the USA, and I still remember my mother tutoring me in the back of our shoe repair shop in Southern California. Witnessing my parents’ perseverance in the land of opportunity has led to ingrained values of gratitude and hard work in all that I do. In my college years, my love for aviation soared when an Army UH-60 Blackhawk scooped my ROTC group off the soccer fields. With the side doors wide open, the pilot took us for an unforgettable ride past the Hollywood sign and Huntington Beach coastline. One of the most striking lines of the US Coast Guard Ethos is the statement "I Will Save Them," referring to the People of the United States. This is the major reason I want to serve in the Coast Guard. I believe there is no occupation more honorable than those who place their lives on the line to so that others may live. I will internalize that aspect as a Coast Guard Aviator and mentor others to have the same focus on the Coast Guard's mission. It has also been a long-standing goal of mine to become an Instructor Pilot and train other Aviators. Living and embodying the Coast Guard Ethos starts by maintaining standards, both inside and outside the cockpit. I have learned that passion is contagious and I love teaching and impressing upon others an appreciation for particular missions and flying

The U.S. Air Force Association honored all the Tuskegee Airmen of WWII at the 2008 Air and Space Conference. They gave out lifetime achievement awards to all who were there. Retired Airmen such as Colonel Charles McGhee, Lt. Colonel Walter McCreary and Colonel Elmer Jones were there to share the spotlight they deserved. They left a lasting legacy to aviators and support personnel. In his book "Lonely Eagles", Dr. Robert A. Rose tells there story of America’s black pilots in World War II. The book is a story of true patriotism, remarkable combat skills.     My ethical and moral views, beliefs, attitudes and values have been fashioned by an up bringing that centred on Christian beliefs. Even though religion was not forced upon me as a child, my mother raised us all with a strong sense of right and wrong. Along with the influence of my family, the Navy has had a big influence on the person I am. The Navy has a strong ethos of what is expected of the personnel that serve; this is made up of the following: Leadership, High Professional Standards, and Courage in Adversity, Determination, Loyalty, Mutual Respect, Discipline, A Sense of Humour, Teamwork, and A Can Do Attitude. Most recently of all though, the biggest thing that has influenced me as a person and a parent has been my experiences of working with young people. This includes acting as a Youth Advisor for Portsmouth City Council, a Mentor for Barnardos and a Youth Advisor for East Sussex County Council. I am currently working in two secondary schools as part of my resettlement from the Navy. This has given me the experience of working with young people living in virtual poverty, in constant trouble with the Police and education services and some young people with varying levels of disabilities. This work has given me a good ability to stay impartial, to be non judgemental and has given me a capacity to treat people a lot more emphatically than I was ever able to. This is because I have been exposed to a greater range of problems and personalities than I have been used to in the Navy. These are qualities that I will hopefully be able to transfer into my coaching practice.
