Direct Commission Aviator Application Narrative 01 October 2017 My commitment to duty and country stem from past generations of humbled service. My grandfather served over 20 years in the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy as a Commissioned Officer, and my father followed in his footsteps as a ROK Army Officer. They believed as I do in selfless service and pursuing a greater cause. My parents immigrated to the USA, and I still remember my mother tutoring me in the back of our shoe repair shop in Southern California. Witnessing my parents’ perseverance in the land of opportunity has led to ingrained values of gratitude and hard work in all that I do. In my college years, my love for aviation soared when an Army UH-60 Blackhawk scooped my ROTC group off the soccer fields. With the side doors wide open, the pilot took us for an unforgettable ride past the Hollywood sign and Huntington Beach coastline. One of the most striking lines of the US Coast Guard Ethos is the statement "I Will Save Them," referring to the People of the United States. This is the major reason I want to serve in the Coast Guard. I believe there is no occupation more honorable than those who place their lives on the line to so that others may live. I will internalize that aspect as a Coast Guard Aviator and mentor others to have the same focus on the Coast Guard's mission. It has also been a long-standing goal of mine to become an Instructor Pilot and train other Aviators. Living and embodying the Coast Guard Ethos starts by maintaining standards, both inside and outside the cockpit. I have learned that passion is contagious and I love teaching and impressing upon others an appreciation for particular missions and flying
