Robert E. Lee once said that “Obedience to lawful authority is the foundation of manly character”. This quote means that if one was to follow the rules, and be a good member of society, that they would be more equipped to make another path for oneself later in life. Clearly the key to good leadership is authority, ruling with an iron first, for those who are swung at will remember a hard hit better than a padded one.Therefore, authoritative leadership is more effective than collaborative leadership because fear and power are more effective tools than respect and decency. This claim can be proven by Trump, Macbeth and Machiavelli.

This is the dirtier side of being an authoritarian but one cannot rule without setting examples. In the beginning of the book Lady Macbeth told Macbeth “Your face, my Thane, is as a book where men May read strange matters. To beguile the time, Look like the time; bear welcome in your eye, Your hand, your tongue; look like th' innocent flower, But be the serpent under't.”(Source A). Sometimes, to become a great leader, one needs a little push. What that means is, a Ruler must take specific precautions to ensure that no one can overthrow the ruler, and restrict complete power. Machiavelli was essentially making a dos and don'ts list for a strong leader. In Machiavelli’s writing The Prince Machiavelli clearly expresses his views that “Nevertheless a prince ought to inspire fear in such a way that, if he does not win love, he avoids hatred; because he can endure very well being feared whilst he is not hated” (Source B).This quote shows that a ruler should strike fear into the eyes of his jurisdiction, but he should not strike hatred or do anything that fuels an overthrowing of the hierarchy. Machiavelli also expresses his opinion about a Collaborative way of rulership (the wrong way) but the other side needs to be addressed
