Parenting styles are as diverse as parents themselves, this refers to the manner in which parents raise their adolescents. Parenting techniques vary from household to household, such as parents’ effect the child’s social skills, level of academic expectations, and styles of discipline. While all parents approach parenthood differently, two of the main parenting styles are permissive and authoritarian. Although permissive and authoritarian parents both strive for preparing their children for the future, the differences between these styles of parenting are significant. However, authoritarian parenting disregards social throngs proposing rigid rules allowing no leeway for their child to attend social gatherings, resulting in lack of sociable skills. On the other hand, adolescents who are raised by permissive parents predominantly tend to have extrovert characteristics allowing the child to be easily sociably acceptable. Whereas, children raised by inflexible authoritarian parents tend to be apprehensive, introverted, and hesitant to engage in social interactions with others, due to lack of social skills. As a matter of fact Baumrind states “children of authoritarian parents tend to be relatively low in social competence, unhappy and unfriendly, and low in self-confidence” (Hall and Burch 3). In particular, permissive parents are indulgent and exhibit no demanding behavior in which they obligate their children to meet high expectations. With no expectations and responsibilities to go by students tend to disregard their education, “Susie Lamborn and colleagues surveyed over 4000 American families and found that adolescents with permissive parenting achieved less at school” (Gwen 4). Proving lack of authority and structure in a permissive household can greatly influence a child's motivation to succeed in school. In contrast authoritarian parents are demanding and strict, enforcing higher levels of expectations upon their adolescents. Students raised in an authoritarian household tend to dominate in school amongst their peers, considering that their parents push their academic expectations beyond their limit.
