“For beautiful eyes, look for the good in the others, for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.” These words were spoken by Audrey Hepburn, a fashion icon, gifted actress and a natural beauty. Seen as an angel by all those who adored her, Audrey Hepburn portrayed the true image of a Hollywood star. Her grace and elegance affected all those she met and her death brought sadness to millions. Living her life like a queen, Audrey had everything she dreamed of. But her way to this life was not easy. Living through the destruction of a world war was only one of the struggles and victories. But her origin of her slender figure was her extreme hunger during the war. According to People Magazine with an interview with Hepburn’s son, Luca Dotti stated, “The reason for her slenderness was become from the time she was 9 to 16, during World War II, she was extremely malnourished. The time where she needed nourishment, she didn’t have enough food.” She struggled to get enough food and had to resort to eating boiled grass, nettles and tulips. But that wasn’t the only struggle she had to endure through. Because of the malnutrition, she suffered from asthma, jaundice, acute anemia and other conditions. On the 16th birthday, Holland was liberated and she was free. But she still carried the agony from the war and all she had seen. But instead of using that as an excuse, she focused on the strengths she had and used them to her advantage. Audrey Hepburn is also known as a passionate philanthropic. She never forgot the misery she underwent in her youth, or the people who brought aid to her community to end of World War II. She devoted her later part of her life helping disadvantaged people to Africa, South America and Asia. She was appointed Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF. As stated by her son Luca Dotti, “She sought to give other children the help she received when she was a child; she sought to repay the good fortune she’d had.” She remembered being a famished girl in Holland and used her gifts and blessings to give back to children who were in the same condition she was in. Audrey spent her last years on earth caring and giving back. She spent her time loving others and being selfless. Even 4 months before her death, when she was suffering from colon cancer, Hepburn still thought about the dilemma of others. As stated by audrey1.com, “In 1992, President George Bush presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of her work at UNICEF and the Academy of Motion Picture of Arts and Sciences awarded her the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her contribution to humanity.” Her empathy to others was accredited and treasured.
