In the novel of To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is one of the best attorneys in the town, he treats everyone equally and treats them respectfully and the town thinks highly of him. Atticus Finch had a terrific personality people would say, an example is when Atticus was told to defend Tom Robinson in a case. This was a major part that shows about his personality is because Tom Robinson is a black male accused of raping someone’s daughter. Back in the time of the Great Depression it was still a time where racism was still there. Racism was worse than it is now, this is because people had thought of colored people as animals and shouldn’t be treated as a person. He gives her a place to sleep if she stays late and also he trusts her with his children. Atticus is a man who can treat everyone with respect, even it be someone who is colored or not. Addition to him treating people with respect, he finds the good in people in the novel after the court hearing with Tom Robinson, Bob Ewell the man who claimed of seeing Tom raping his daughter, saw Atticus walking in town stopped him and then spat in his face. Instead of Atticus saying something bad about him or cursing he simply had said, “I wish Bob Ewell wouldn’t chew tobacco.” (Lee 291). This shows how Atticus even if the person can be a bad person he still wanted to treat the person with respect. As well as when one of his neighbors named Mrs. Dubose; who is addicted to morphine and tries to stop her addiction, she has always said bad things about Atticus and his children. Mrs. Dubose is always talking about Atticus is also a nigger-lover and also how his children should be more respectful. All Atticus says is that she is sick and she doesn’t know what she is saying and how she doesn’t mean it. He strives to give Scout and Jem spirit, bravery and tolerance to others. "If you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. He teaches this life lesson to show that it's actually achievable to live with principles without losing sight of hope or acting skeptical. When people think about heros it is a person in a cape flying into burning buildings to save people or fighting a villain to save the world. According to Oxford Dictionary a hero is a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. This shows how just normal people can be qualified as heros. A book that exemplifies this is To Kill A Mockingbird because it is filled with people that went out of their way to help others or the society as a whole. Atticus is an incredible character in the book To Kill A Mockingbird. He displays three qualities that make him an incredible character. Atticus is determined. This is evident in the trial when he tries very hard to win for Tom Robinson and when he wants to take the case for an appeal. Atticus is also kind. We witness Atticus’ kindness in the way he acts and treats everyone in Maycomb. Atticus treats everyone with respect even if they don’t deserve it. Lastly, Atticus is patient. Firstly, Atticus Finch acts justly, fairly, and always helps others who need it. One of his clients, Mr. Cunningham, pays Atticus in entailment. Scout asks her brother, Jem what the meaning of paying in entailment is, “Jem described it as a condition of having your tail in a crack … one morning Jem and I found a load of stovewood in the back yard … Mr. Cunningham had more than paid him” (Lee 20-21). Atticus is known for many qualities he displayed during the novel, as well as various achievements. This makes him a heroic character. Atticus Finch is a hero because he defended a black man in court, proved his abilities and intelligences, and cared for everybody equally.
In addition, Tom Robinson is a black man who was accused of raping 19 year old Mayella Ewell. Atticus Finch bravely and courageously took on the case even though he got the idea that it would take a miracle to win. By taking on the Tom Robinson case, it proved that Atticus was not a follower which separated himself from the rest of the town. During the trial, Atticus says, “Our courts have their faults, as does any human institution, but in this country our courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal.” (Lee 274). Atticus is referring to his beliefs and how they are legitimate. He stands up for righteousness and justice rather than the majority. Lee illustrates Atticus Finch as a very understanding character, especially during the Tom Robinson trial. During the revolting times of the 1930s, it was outlandish for a white man to stand up for a Negro man. For example, when the towns’ people are talking about Atticus, they say, “You know the court appointed him to defend this nigger.” “Yeah, Atticus aims to defend him, that’s what is don’t like about it” (218). When Atticus is delegated to defend Tom Robinson, he not only defends him because he was ordered to. Atticus intentionally helped Tom and wanted Tom to win. Even though the towns’ people did not like Atticus aiming to defend Tom, he understood that it was his duty to help him. Another example is in chapter 22 when Bob Ewell spits on Atticus’s face. Atticus didn’t react intrusive because he knew that it would affect people’s outlook on the trial and on Tom. Atticus stood above the standard and helped a black man, which earned him respect from the Negro people in town. Atticus was very wholehearted when deciding to help Tom Robinson in the trial.
Atticus also tries to be a perfect southern gentleman. His treatment of Mrs. Dubose proves this characteristic. Even though Mrs. Dubose makes vicious comments and criticisms of Atticus and his children, he still manages to treat her in the kindest manner; complimenting her appearance and helping her into her chair.
Atticus has countless positive and negative characteristics, but there are two that stand out the most. The first character trait is that he acts a lot older than his age. Jem said that Atticus loved playing keep away and that he was never too tired, but when Jem went to tackle him, Atticus blurred out, “‘I am too old for that, son’” (Lee 118). Jem had never gotten that reaction from Atticus before. Atticus had to wear glasses, because without them he would not be able to see black on white with his left eye.
