What makes a father an extraordinary one? Well Atticus Finch as a whole is definitely an extraordinary father, but an extraordinary father is one who always uses a teachable moment to its full potential. Also, a father who wants an unbreakable bond with his children and will always be there for them. The night after my first day of school I told Atticus I didn’t want to go to school anymore because I disliked my teacher, but then he taught me an important lesson of needing to see through the point of view of another person before really understanding them. It is a lesson that makes getting along better with any person much easier. He is the reason I learned that because he took the time to wonder about my wellbeing which is one reason why he is the Father of the Year. There is also the time when I overheard Atticus talking to Uncle Jack about the Tom Robinson trial affecting Jem and me, but he wanted us to come to him for answers, not letting the towns opinion get to us. Also, he hoped that we trusted him enough. The main part that struck me when I heard him say this was that he was questioning his own fathering and wondering if he was good enough to be trusted by his children, me. One time when I was chatting with Miss Maudie she mentioned that Atticus was the best checker player in town and how down at the Landing, he could beat everyone on both sides of the river. I was surprised because Jem and I beat him in checkers all the time, but Miss Maudie thought it was about time that I found out he let us win. At first I was a bit upset because I thought I was amazing at checkers since I always beat Atticus, but then I was happy because he lost against us to boost Jem and I’s self esteem so that we would be confident in ourselves.
