“You will never be anything without courage” - Aristotle. Atticus Finch might have agreed with this definition, but his definition is slightly different: “It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” (Lee 149) In the novel To Kill a Mocking Bird the author Harper Lee uses many characters to represent Atticus’ definition of courage. The town of Maycomb is said to be diseased with prejudice which makes their acts even more courageous. Atticus, Mrs. Dubose, and Boo Radley are all characters that show great courage in the novel.

Dubose shows courage during the book by trying to break her morphine addiction by reading with Jem, although she ends up dying, she never gives up. Mrs. Dubose is courageous because even though she was sick and truly needed the morphine she tried to break her addiction. “She said she was going to leave this world beholden nothing and nobody. Jem when you’re as sick as she was it’s alright to take anything to make it easier, but it wasn’t all right for her. She said she meant to break herself of it and that’s what she did.” (Lee 148) This quote shows how Ms. Dubose is willing to do anything to cure her addiction, she knows if she gives up morphine she could die, but she decides it she needs to break the addiction. Boo Radley leaves the comfort of his home to save Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell and bring them home. “He was going around the corner. He was carrying Jem. Jem’s arm was dangling crazily in front of him.” (Lee 352) This quote is about boo Radley bringing home jam and scout and shows how Boo is courageous enough to leave his house which he does not like to do and goes to risk his life to save Jem and Scout. In addition, boo is courageous enough to retrieve and sew Jem’s pants, which could have gotten him in trouble with Nathan Radley. “They’d been sewed up. Not like a lady sewed ‘em like somethin’ I’d try to do. All crooked almost like- ““-somebody knew you were comin’ back for ‘em.” (Lee 78) This quote shows how Boo Radley is willing to help another even if the chances of him not getting in trouble are slim. Boo Radley shows great physical and mental courage by saving Jem and Scout and fixing Jem’s pants.
In the novel to kill a mockingbird Atticus, Mrs. Dubose, and Boo Radley show great courage in the novel. Harper Lee uses these characters to exemplify Atticus’ definition of courage.
