When people acknowledge the word, Democracy, most of them associate it with America. Many times people believe that America has created the idea of democracy and a voice for all government. Though, thats not true because the term democracy has been derived from the Ancient Greek City-State, Athens. Democracy played a huge role in Athens, and America had inspiration from the Athenian democracy, to create a democracy which was evolved and in a way transformed. Although Athenian and American Democracies can be similar, the Athenian democracy was considered more democratic because it was direct which allowed citizens’ voices to be heard, and it was the origin of the terms democracy and freedom in a type of government. While the Athenian and American Democracy share the idea of Democracy, there are a lot of visible differences in the way both democracies were ran or are run today. The Athenian Democracy had a direct democracy, which meant that eligible citizens voted on everything. As it had been stated by John R. Hale of THE EPIC STORY OF THE ATHENIAN NAVY AND THE BIRTH OF DEMOCRACY, “only males who were over the age of 18 could vote,” even though this idea seems wrong today, it was understandably ethical at the time because most nations did not consider. slaves and women equal to men. Women and Slaves had very little rights compared to men over the age of 18, and were supposed to work and take care of situations at home. Typically women were not deemed as great as men to run a country or be in a higher position than they were at the time. Aristotle's democracy was a democracy that endorsed equality to its fullest. Instead of forcing the thoughts of everyone through one biased individual, it allowed every person to have a voice. America is not a democracy. It tries very hard to make the people of the world think it is, but it is not. It goes against much of what Aristotle spoke of with fervor. Ideas from documents created in England, such as the Bill of Rights, were brought over to the colonies. These ideas were implemented into the society of the colonists. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary Democracy is a form of government by the people; especially: rule of the majority(Webster). This is what the United States is represented as, and this is based on the United States Constitution from which the United states draws all legal powers. In Robert Dahls book How democratic Is the American Constitution? He challenges this idea by trying to appeal to his readers in a way that they may view the United States Constitution in a different light. Dahl does this by pointing out flaws that the Constitution has and, draws on facts based on the other democracies around the world that the United States is compared too. He points out how many democratic ideas and innovations have a occurred since the conception of the American Constitution yet it has only adopted some of those idea.
They were originally established with the intent to give most of the power to the people. The power to vote for the leaders and settle issues professionally. Both forms of governments had senates, which represented the people and helped the nations succeed, by not allowing one person to gain complete power like a king or emperor would. They both did not want kings ruling the entire kingdom, so they gave the people more power by allowing them a voice with some form of voting. Power was also given to representatives and officials in the republic and democracy. The Athenians were able to vote for legislation and bills, while the Romans elected officials to vote on the people’s behalf. The Roman’s established an aristocratic republic controlled by only wealthy people, so the power was not shared equally in society. On the contrary the Athenians allowed anyone to be in government as long as they were a male citizen. A form of the executive branch emerged from both systems; Rome had two consuls elected by council and Athens had a council of five hundred men. They both had different regulations on who was able to be a citizen. However Athenian democracy formed the basic structure of many western societies today and has influenced them significantly. A continuity when comparing modern society’s and Ancient Greeks form of democracy is that the Ancient Greeks had a judicial system much like today people were chosen to sit on juries (What did democracy really mean?, 2015).However there wasn’t a cross examination and imprisonment was not used as a punishment, instead if someone was found guilty they either had to pay a fine or was put to death (ABC, 2003). Like our modern democracy, the Athenian democracy was created as a reaction to a concentration and abuse of power by the rulers.
