1 - What is a professional learning community? Provide a brief description on how you can create, and/or engage in, a PLC.
Professional community is where a group of teachers in conjunction with administrators gather to work on students learning growth and helps you improve your professional growth. In addition, the teachers can share resources, I can engage in a PLC by discussing different strategies or techniques used in the classroom that are working effectively. In addition, the teacher may be able to ask questions/ suggestions to other teachers of things she can use in the classroom.

According to Early Childhood Education Today by George S. Morrison, it states that professionalism is built upon individual responsibility, integrity, and ethical practices that demonstrate respect for all children and their families. There are four concepts of professionalism which include, personal characteristics, educational attainment, professional practice, and public presentation. There are a variety of key components that contribute to professionalism in a classroom and we are going to discuss many of those today.
Professional development is a process of increasing and improving the performance of workers through access to education and training opportunities in the workplace, through outside organizations, or through watching others perform the task. Basically it helps in improving the teamwork among the workers and also it helps to attract high quality workers in an organization. This also helps in the one to make the right plans for the new products and the smooth running of the business.
Eric Schaps defines classroom community for us in his online article titled “Creating Caring School Communities”. The following is his definition:

This definition is relevant and consistently useful to this research because the authors define communities of practice as groups of people who share a concern, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise in this area by interacting on an ongoing basis. On the other hand, Lesser and Storck (2001) define these communities could meet at a physical location or could be virtually connected through various communication media such as email and internet applications.

The planning in PLC’s contributes to providing a structured framework that includes reflections and evaluations. Furthermore, the PLC meetings builds a culture that supports collaboration and helps to develop shared beliefs. For instance, teachers at my school have one day a month to go into another teacher’s room to observe or demonstrate a new activity that they had plan together. In addition, teachers use questioning or exit slips to see if the lesson or activity as produce the desired learning (Collaborative Planning, 2016). Teachers can be the students by role playing. During the PLC’s, the teachers can model behaviors, how to anticipate how the content writing based instruction with students because teachers are acting like the students in the PLC. Doing this helps teachers to see why students are not motivated to write and then figure out together as a team to incorporate cooperative interaction between faculty and students. The teachers work together as if they are the students. Next, the teachers take the new information or lesson and model and use it with students in the classroom and allowing others teachers to come in and observe. Afterwards, we will debrief with each other and see what worked and what did not. The meetings are important just as an actual observation. Also, after the debriefings, a writing coach work with teachers in a day-long. Today good teachers are in classrooms, but to be a great educator, one needs to be able to study, be reflective, practice and lots of hard work. Professional learning communities are only one method for teachers to gain knowledge. It is necessarily important that teachers have high-quality PLC’s because it not only for teachers but students as well. For my professional learning community (PLC) experience, I decided to visit a meeting outside of my school district and reached out to a friend who works in my local school district. I am friends with two of the former members of the history department at this school. Through them, I have heard of the collaboration that they participated in when they were still on site. This one small branch of a history department has produced a nationally bestselling author, one of the strongest district instructional technology directors in the county, and a member of the leadership team of a local educational technology (edtech) organization. I asked one of my friends to help arrange an observation of this strong PLC and I was not disappointed.

Growing up, I was always told to find what you love doing most then find a way to get paid for it. Early on, I realized I will have two great loves in my life: helping people and reading. These passions of mine has inspired me to teach and share my passion with others; specifically with at-risk students and low-income families who may struggle with literacy. With this in mind, I find that the National Education Association (NEA) and the International Reading Association (IRA) are two professional organizations that I can greatly benefit from.

As a future educator, I have many goals. My first goal would be to never overpower my students. Being a teacher should not be a job, it should be a passion.
