Developing these skills involve learning one’s self and capabilities. During this process a lot of information emerges and a lot of introspection is needed. While doing this self-evaluation areas such as image, dealing with the feelings of others, and various communication dynamics must be examined. This process can be time consuming and effective, it is worth the time and effort that is required in order to be successful. As a primarily introverted person, I shy away from extraversion which can deter my people and communication skills. While I do not lack interpersonal and social (people) skills, these areas to consider for improvement. To be an effective leader, one must be able to communicate well within small and large groups. An effective leader must have effective social judgement skills. While I do not lack self-confidence or the other traits that are needed for great leaders, I do realize the need to enhance my communication skills significantly to become a greater leader.
Describe the experience briefly (What was the background? What triggered the experience? What happened? What was the outcome?)
With most leaders, leadership cannot be taught, but learned through experience and ingenuity. Learning from mistakes is one of the greatest ways to obtain knowledge as an individual is able to develop the wisdom to make good decisions and choices for the organization. While making the wrong decisions leads an individual to obtain experience from his failures. He is able to use this experience to make good decisions because he is conscious of his mistake and know what to do in order to not make it happen again. Experience is one of the best tools to become a leader as the wisdom obtained from it serves as a guide to making good decisions. Secondly, a leader’s personality can determine his leadership style and his willingness to be a leader. With a high degree of certain personality traits, a leader is able to be formed as a high degree in these traits allow him to be able to handle a number of factors. Improving upon these traits can assist me not only in the workplace, but volunteer settings, university, or even my own personal environment. Knowing how to utilize these skills can boost my own personal confidence, as well as those around me, showing the importance of leadership in every-day life. This proves leadership is often transmitted through experience and practice, making it of value to demonstrate these qualities in every aspect in life. I can recall a situation in which I could have stepped up and lead an activity through my volunteer practicum at the SCRI society The Club, however I was not confident enough in my own abilities. I ended up regretting not leading the activity, which could have led to a possible position within the club, and often reflect on how I could have improved my leadership skills at that time to achieve my goal. Moving forward this will encourage me to improve upon such skills, and promote a better desire to understand what it is to be a
A key component to leadership is to master skills that one already possesses. The greatest leaders in the world do not necessarily stem from the best universities or some costly academic background. One of the strongest traits a person can have is understanding what their leadership style is. When one understands his or her leadership style this can work strongly to one 's advantage. The goal is to garner the best results with the least amount of effort whenever possible therefore many particulars exist which can add to this equation and understanding one’s personal leadership style is a great place to start.
Listening and understanding what others communicate to us is the communication process needed for interpersonal effectiveness. If you listen well, you will understand the meaning of the message. If you are unfocused, you will not know most of what the other person is saying. However, there is a range of listening skills that can be learned to develop the communication effectiveness. ...ividuals that truly listen and acknowledge those ideas and message. In today’s workforce perfecting the skill of effective listening is an ability and technique that can lead to growth and success if properly applied. Finally, as Nichols’ accurately accounted “listening is hard work” (1961) and I believe that it is a skill that must be proactively developed and honed over time requiring concerted and focused effort (Nichols, p. 124).
Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic. You are a leader if someone else choses to follow you.
As a professional in today’s society, it is greatly important to be able to communicate effectively with other professionals, with clients, and with those that are encountered in daily living. In order to communicate in a proper manner, not only is talking and non-verbal communication, but a large aspect is the ability to listen. Listening is a vital task in order to build a relationship and find meaning in someone else’s words. In order to find this meaning one must follow the characteristics of active listening, face the challenges to listening, and reflect upon one’s own listening skills.
Another strength of mine as a listener is the ability to ask questions and to keep myself engaged in the conversation. For me, asking questions are important because they clarify information if I do not understand and allow for asking for more information. On the other hand, it is important to not ask too many questions because then I am taking over the conversation and not listening. As a financial advisor, I have daily potential client meetings where listening is critical and allows me to take away key information. During these conferences, I ask the prospective customers questions and based off of their answers, I evaluate a possible financial outcome for their present and future. If I do not listen and pay strict attention to each client’s detailed an...
In all aspects in life effective listening plays an important role in our lives, both professionally and personally. As many of know from experience listening is never easy in fact it can be difficult to understand what is being said by the speaker. Because of laps in attention we tend to misunderstand some of the messages that are being relayed to us or disregard them altogether. Effective listening is important for receiving the correct feedback from those you’re speaking with and requires a focus that should be central to what is being said or what topic is being discussed.
Let’s explore why listening is so critical. “Adam listened to Eve. In that first spoken word message and all since, no communication occurred until there was a listener. It follows, then, that there has become a much-heightened need to listen. We must understand the fundamental relationship involved, we cannot escape it” (Mills 1). The characteristics of good listening skills can be best understood by using the acronym MASTER. The “m” refers to mental. Mental is the ability to slow down and strategically control our ability to listen. “A” refers to active. Being active utilizes constructive listening responses and constant practice can keep this sharp. The “s” refers to sustaining attention. Experienced concentration is crucial for sustaining attention. “T” refers to target. There are four types of potential listening targets; responsive listening, implicative listening, critical listening and nondirective listening. Responsive listening is the agreement between listener and speaker. Implicative listening involves carefully understanding what is implied by hearing what is said. Critical listening is the process of coming to the point of a subject by clearing away all the non-important information. Nondirective listening is fully hearing the speaker out. The “e” refers to eliminating t...
Listening is one of the most powerful tools of communication and is a process that is used to receive, convey a meaning, and respond to both verbal and nonverbal messages. Hearing is a passive process that takes in sounds and noises and listening is what you choose to do. This selective process includes 5 phases that can be acquired for us to become effective listeners in the future. The 5 phases are attending, understanding, remembering, critically evaluating (listening), and responding. Once the 5 different areas are understood, we will become aware of what needs to change and how we can change them. This will also allow us to improve our listening skills in the workplace, school, at home, etc.
