Aryabhata was born in around 476 CE. He was born in India during the Kali Kusumpura Yuga (the age of the demon). This age was known as the age of demon because it had constant eclipses, which people believed to be created by a demon. Most of Aryabhata’s childhood and life events are a mystery. Hardly any records are left about his life. During this era, many didn’t write, but rather used symbols that represented words. Aryabhata, for instance, used his knuckles as a calendar. January would start from the pinky of the left hand. February would be the ring finger of the left hand and so on. All that is known about Aryabhata is that he was indeed one of the first Indian astronomers and mathematicians.
However, information was discovered until the books Aryabhatiya and Surya Siddhanta were found. Aryabhata wrote Aryabhatiya, in it, he stated that he was twenty-three years of age and he finished writing the book in 499 CE. Aryabhata is also known as Aryabhata I, since it was thought that there were two Aryabhatas during the time, a mathematician and an astronomer. Later, it was confirmed that the two Aryabhatas were the same person, when they were put together to combine information. Until then, others realized that they had been referring to the same person. It was hard to believe that a single person could be so knowledgeable. Today, we know that Aryabhata lived in India because of his writing; however, his books do not reveal any personal information, rather sticks to only facts about math and astronomy.

It is assumed that Aryabhata came from a wealthy family, since he was able to afford an education. His education allowed him to study and explain new theories. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to have any actually proof and people soon forgot about him. In later ages, new astronomers also found similar information and took credit for the work. It was until Aryabhata’s books were thoroughly analyzed that people realized that Aryabhata was the first to find this information. However, that felt many people wandering of who actually was to be credited for the findings.
Aryabhata died in 500 CE. It is assumed that he died of illness, as there were hardly any medical advances at the time. He was 74 years old when he died. Aryabhata was a brilliant mathematician and astronomer who influenced many others with his unique works.
