I circle around my easel, the subtle odor of turpenoid permeating the air. Instinctively, I begin to glide my brush across the textured canvas, transfixed as the vivid colors diffuse within each other, waltzing across the canvas and concentrating within the minuscule divots of its surface. My worries disintegrate and my mind untangles. Art has always been my "thing". It's the thing that has defined my entire being and will forever pave the road I walk on. Walking into my house, it's difficult to miss the abundance of oil paintings lining the walls and the autobiographies of art masters cluttering the tables. The name of my family’s wifi is "Sargent" and our curtains and rugs are inspired by the rich Venetian colors used by Titian and Bellini. Although I'm terrible at remembering significant events in history class, I can spot a sketch on a wine glass label and name the date and artist of the piece. I struggled in calculus, but I know how to translate the abnormal twists and turns of reality onto a piece of paper with immense precision. Each fortuitous stroke mirrors and channels my chaotic thoughts and each mass of light serves as a reminder of all that I am capable of. Vulnerability and passion are streamlined through my hands and transcend onto the rough surface. I encounter challenges, make mistakes, wipe away brush strokes, but my determination only intensifies as I struggle to render the perfect reflection of myself. This moment, where I am in complete control, reminds me of who I am and the power and strength that I possess. I’ve learned to access this sense of confidence through multiple dimensions of creativity, not just through a blank canvas, but through the black and white keys of a piano, the sharp lens of a camera, an empty journal, or through the many marvels mother nature
