The Renaissance could be considered as an awakening for Europeans from the dark middle ages. Humanity took a remarkable leap forward during and after the Renaissance. People became more individual and confident in the new lifestyle that they lived. The renaissance shifted how people viewed their purpose and individuality in art, literature, astronomy, and anatomy. Art has always had a monumental influence on history all throughout the planet. Despite how much art changes and evolves, it always seems to serve a big purpose for people. Two paintings that display an altar in art are The Madonna Enthroned Between Two Angels by Duccio di Buoninsegna as well as Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. The Madonna Enthroned Between Two Angels by Duccio di Buoninsegna during the Middle Ages shows a more religious subject matter and is created more two dimensional. Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci created towards the end of the Renaissance shows more defined landscapes, natural folds in drapery, and three dimensional figures. Literature played a big role in the development of people during the Renaissance. Two pieces of literature that show a change are Everyman written by an unknown author in 1485 and an excerpt from Act 2, Scene 2 of Hamlet by William Shakespeare, 1601. Ptolemy, was a Roman astronomer who lived about 100 years after the time of jesus created a diagram of how he thought the universe worked, geocentric. On the contrary, Nicolaus Copernicus, who lived from 1473 to 1543 relied mostly on mathematics, referring to the universe as being heliocentric. Copernicus's theory of the universe was upsetting to the church on account of his ideas being based more on mathematics rather than the church’ beliefs.
