Childe Hassam was an American impressionist, a movement that was developed in paris and can be considered the first modern movement in painting. The characteristics that were specific to impressionism are very prominent throughout Hassam piece “fifth avenue nocturne”. The first characteristic is the brush strokes. hassam used large and visible strokes to help portray a dreamy and abstract mood. he also created different textures, both visually and physically, by layering colors on top of other colors. which resulted in him applying a technique called broken brushstrokes. The second characteristic is the lighting, which is usually one of the most important things that Impressionist use in their paintings and is very important in his because he uses the lighting in the painting to display where his two figures are. the third characteristic is the use of pure color Artists traditionally mixed paints on their palette to achieve a certain hue or color before applying it to the canvas. The saturation in this painting, just like the value, ranges from low to high. The blues in the painting are really intense (In terms of saturation), to the point in some places where the blue stops being a hue but instead becomes a value all by itself (black or white). I feel that his use of color goes really well with the theme he was trying to make. By blue being his sole hue and depending on the type of blue I think hanson I was trying to convey sophistication, tranquility, and integrity.
