Arson is one of the oldest crimes recognized throughout the world. It is defined as the intentional and malicious burning of a structure or building (Montaldo). Arson can cost the lives of individuals and the damages can be costly. In 2010, there were about 260,600 fires (“Arson and Intentional Fires,” n.d.). Many of these fires were intentionally set. These fires have resulted in an estimated 390 deaths, 1,340 injuries, and $1.2 billion in damages (“Arson and Intentional Fires,” n.d.). Most of the fires have occurred outside, but most of the deaths, injuries, and losses occurred in structures, particularly in homes (“Arson and Intentional Fires,” n.d.). Arson is considered to be a property crime to law enforcement agencies, despite that the fires created by the arsonist can injure and kill many people. This paper will discuss the history of arson as well as explaining why arson is difficult to prove, why people commit it, and also provides specific case examples and suggestions on what people can do to reduce the risk of arson. As stated, arson is recognized as one of the oldest crimes around. It was an offense in the English common law. The English common law was produced by King Henry II, who ruled England from 1154 to 1189. In this system of law, the rulings made by the courts of the King were based on the common customs of the country. Many buildings during that time were made of wood that was very dry. When these wooden buildings were set on fire by arsonists, they were able to burn and spread quickly. The more damage done, the higher the consequences are for the arsonists. Unlike the past, arson can be committed in various forms today. One way to reduce the risk of an arson attack on the home is by installing an intruder alarm system that may help in keeping the potential arsonist away. People can also install fire alarms and extinguishers and store matches, lighters, or any dangerous and flammable liquids away in a safe place. To make it more preventable for arsonists to enter the home, people should close all windows and lock all doors before they go out. In conclusion, I will restate the main points. First, I covered the history of arson. Second, I explained why arson is difficult to prove and persecute in court. Third, I proposed reasons as to why arsonists commit the offense. Fourth, I provided specific case examples of famous arsonists and finally, I provided some ideas about how individuals can reduce the risk of arson at their home.
