Introduction

We have all heard about Arsenal football club or the Gunners, one of Englands most succesful clubs throughout history. The club is based in Holloway, London, and was founded in Woolwich 1886 as Dial Square. Arsenal has won a total of 13 first division titles, including the Premier League, 10 FA cups, 2 league cups, 12 community shields, 1 european cup winners’ cup and Inter-cities fair cup. The Gunners has a remarkable record, namely for most consecutive seasons in the English top flight.

Every team has a long-standing rivalry with another team, and Arsenal’s rivals through history are North London neighbours Tottenham Hotspur. The match between these two clubs are therefor called the North London derby.

Valued more than $1.3 billion, Arsenal is the fourth most valuable association football club in the world as of the year 2013, behind Real Madrid, Manchester United and Barcelona.

History of Arsenal F.C. (1886–1966)

The origins of the London based club can be tracked back to the late 1800s to a group of workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, south-east of London. Later that year, the workers assembled to form the club Dial Square, as it was named in the beginnings, which had its origins from the workshop most of the workers worked at. The club was shortly afterwards renamed to Royal Arsenal. Another rename to Woolwich Arsenal took place in 1893, as a result of the club becoming a limited company.

A few years after that, Arsenal generally performed a mid-table performance, until the arrival of the first professional manager, Harry Bradshaw, which coincided with the team finishing as runners-up to Preston, and by that, gaining promotion to the first division. Arsenal’s match record that year, was winning all but two home matches, with a goals record of 67 scored goals and 5 admitted (91-22 overall).

The promotion lead to the arrival of the new manager Phil Kelso, who managed to take the team to the semi-finals of the FA cup two consecutive years, but lost both against Newcastle United in 1906 and Sheffield Wednesday 1907. Just as a few years ago, the team stayed in the mid-table, until relegation was avoided by two points in the 1909/10 season. During that time, while the club was near a bankrupt, the chairman of Fulham football club took over.
