The premise of this essay is to give an idea of what the philosopher Aristotle’s view on the education system in the early 1900s. Specifically, the schools influenced by John Dewy and the schools influenced by him, such as the ones in Gary, Indiana. My idea is to have Aristotle give his thoughts and ideas both good and bad on the way the school system was run at that time and who’s idea of public schools best fits the need of the children becoming moral citizens. Aristotle will run through a school day with the children starting with his walk to school, observing classes (reading, writing, arithmetic, home economics, machine shop, field trips) and finally the end of the school
Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
Education is one of the most widely debated issues of our country in this current day and age. Many people feel as though schooling is biased and unfair to certain students; meanwhile, others feel as though the schooling systems are not serious enough in order to properly educate students to prepare them for their futures. The three texts that will be discussed, are all well written controversial essays that use a great deal of rhetorical appeals which help readers relate to the topics being discussed. John Taylor Gatto in his essay “Against School” explains the lack of motivation that students have to the educational system of the USA. He also explains the damage that the system makes to both, students and teachers, by the non-interesting topics they are taught class. Furthermore, he enlightens the indifference of students towards the teacher, seem as incompetent and unprepared. In addition, he also highlights the dark side of the school system which intends to brainwash and rescind the ideas from students. He addresses a main goal of the educational system; convert juveniles into the next docile and manageable generation. Wherefore, he proposes an educational system that should be structured and not controlled. In addition,
Education did not form part of the life of women before the Revolutionary War and therefore, considered irrelevant. Women’s education did not extend beyond that of what they learned from their mothers growing up. This was especially true for underprivileged women who had only acquired skills pertaining to domesticity unlike elite white women during that time that in addition to having acquired domestic skills they learned to read a result becoming literate. However, once the Revolutionary War ended women as well as men recognized the great need for women to obtain a greater education. Nonetheless, their views in regards to this subject differed greatly in that while some women including men believed the sole purpose of educating women was in order to better fulfil their roles and duties as wives and mothers others believed the purpose of education for women was for them “to move beyond the household field.” The essays of Benjamin Rush and Judith Sargent Murray provide two different points of view with respects to the necessity for women to be well educated in post-revolutionary America.
The average human would think that going to school and getting an education are the two key items needed to make it in life. Another common belief is, the higher someone goes with their education, the more successful they ought to be. Some may even question if school really makes anyone smarter or not. In order to analyze it, there needs to be recognition of ethos, which is the writer 's appeal to their own credibility, followed by pathos that appeals to the writer’s mind and emotions, and lastly, logos that is a writer’s appeal to logical reasoning. Within the walls of our educational system lie many adverse problems. Is there a solution to such problems? If so, what is the solution? As we take a look at two different essays by two different authors’ John Gatto and Alfie Kohn, both highlight what’s wrong within our educational system in today’s society. As John Gatto explores the concept if schools are really as necessary as they’re made out to be; Alfie Kohn analyzes the non-importance of letter grades within our schools. Although both essays are fairly different, they still pose some similarities in relation to the educational system in today’s society.
Schools have evolved constantly throughout the years starting when they were first created, to our present day. Society has been testing multiple schooling styles to try and find the best form to benefit all students equally. In the reading assigned in class from the textbook, “School and Society: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives,” I agree with Orestes Brownson’s assessment that Horace Mann’s plan for common schooling and establishment of normal schools was undemocratic, because it did affect our free society as a country, produce conservative teachers and the board did have influence on what books should be placed in school libraries.
Labaree discusses how the United State’s education is in a school syndrome, as people in America want schools to teach society’s ideals as well as let people express their individuality. These two demands are polar opposites that cannot be achieved. As the focus goes towards balancing these in hopes of improving society as a whole, the bettering of actual student learning is put on pause. Labaree talks about the beginning of education reform, in the 19th century, being the most successful in developing society; however, as education reform continued throughout time, its effectiveness wore off. He then addresses how the desire for education reform is more about improving society than it is about learning. He finishes his argument by providing possible solutions to fixing this problem, but states that fixing this problem will never happen because no one is willing to give up both demands. Overall, Labaree goes in wonderful detail explaining the problems of education reform. What made me choose this article was that he addressed the desire that people have on school systems in promoting both society normality and individuality. This correlates well with my topic in whether public school systems promote conformist ideals or individuality.
During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, education became an overwhelmingly important weapon in the fight against ignorance and injustice of earlier times (Urban, 2009). With the spread of Enlightenment across several countries, the newly created world in America was one of hope, fear, and uncertainty of new ideas. Education and enlightenment were to become the keys to future of the new world and the building blocks for our modern society. Unbeknownst to many at the time, education was going to be the missing link between the present and the future. A picture collage of best friends, a credit card, a pair of keys that unlock a car and a house, a picture of a favorite athlete and last but not least, a minion plush toy. All these items are representative of a common idea: the good life. The ability to surround one’s self around people who love them, the ability to purchase any item deemed necessary for living, having a home and car to shelter one from the outside world, people to look up to and the idea that everyone works hard and is equal are all ideas represented by the good life according to typical college students. In his essay “Against School,” John Taylor Gatto illustrates his view point that the American population would be better off by managing their own education. He compares the school system to the concept of boredom; that students as well as teachers are victims of the long ago adopted Prussian educational system: “We suppress our genius only because we haven’t yet figured out how to manage a population of educated men and women. The solution, I think, is simply and glorious. Let them manage themselves.” In other words, Gatto believes that the main reason for the existence of schooling consists in that it trains our children to be obedient citizens who can’t think on their own. The Quality of a child’s education often either limits or opens up a world of opportunities. Those who study the purpose of public education and the way it is distributed throughout society can often identify clear correlations between social class and the type of education a student receives. It is generally known by society that wealthy families obtain the best opportunities money can buy. Education is a tool of intellectual and economical empowerment and since the quality of education is strongly influenced by social class, a smaller portion of the American population obtains the opportunities acquired from a top notch education. Many people believe that educational inequalities are perpetuated from the interests of specific classes, but some researchers like John Gatto believe that there are even stronger social forces in play. In the essay “Against Schools” the author John Gatto presents three arguments: (1) that are educational system is flawed, (2) that the American educational system is purposely designed to create a massive working class that is easy to manipulate, and (3) alternative teaching methods should be applied to teach children to think for themselves. In this essay I will be summarizing and relating each of these arguments to other educational essays. Also, I will be discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the author’s argument.
Education is a process of learning in which we acquire knowledge and skills under the guidance of a teacher. Ideas, information and culture are conveyed from one generation to another (Murphy, 2006). Education is the development by which we are formed as human beings and by which a society preserves and transforms itself. Education is the most important way in which we can fight oppression, injustice and inequality by promoting and fighting for equality and justice in our society (Norris, personal communication, September 4, 2013). There has been some sort of education, whether being formal or informal, ever since human beings existed. Many of our education policies and systems originate from ancient Greece. Likewise, there are many Greek educators and philosophers who influenced our education system today. The purpose of this paper is to identify the significance and contributions of four of these educators, who include Sappho, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, by observing their major contributions to education. Furthermore, this paper will discuss the relationship between these four philosophers, the key components of their philosophy of education, and their contributions to modern day education.
As Aristotle was one of Plato’s most devoted and bright students, it is interesting to examine the ways in which his Lyceum resembles as well as rivals Plato’s Academy. These two philosophers and their teaching practices became models for schools across Western Europe. Approximately twenty-three centuries later, the lasting impressions and continuous influences these two educators and their schools have on today’s society are remarkable.
For Aristotle, he used the Golden Mean, in every situation which he found to be two vices with mean in the middle. For example, as discussed in class, two vices are cheap and wasteful, the mean being generosity, is the way to live by. “It should be said, then that every virtue causes its possessors to be in a good state and to perform their functions well”. (Aristotle II, 6) Aristotle wants people to live a life of balance and temperance to have a fulfilling and happy life, which he defines as, happiness is the activity of the soul in accordance with virtue. He does make it a point to say that we can’t just be taught in school how to be moral but rather it’s a choice that you have to practice on. Aristotle believes no one is born evil
