The legalization of marijuana is a very prominent and controversial topic in today’s society. Many people will argue against the legalization because of the lies and stereotypes that have been posed against the typical “pot smoker.” The skewed perception of lazy and unmotivated Americans spread over the last century have distorted the truth about cannabis. There are many different reasons for legalizing marijuana including an easy tax to profit from, medical reasons, and also many drugs and substances that are already legal are much more dangerous. One of the immediate favorable reasons for legalizing marijuana is the tax the government could place on it. A tax on legal marijuana could bring in millions of dollars in pure revenue. Just as legalizing weed could bring in money, it could also save money. Some of the money that goes into searching out for illegal weed would not have to be used. People who originally got weed illegally could then get it in completely legal ways. Another upside to legalizing marijuana is that the drug has countless uses in the medical field. Marijuana is useful in many sleep apnea patients. The calming effects of the drug allow someone to fall and stay asleep easier. Marijuana’s calming effect can also be used in anger management. Weed also helps your eyes by preventing …show more content…
The sheer amount of positive effects the legalization of weed could have in America greatly outnumber what little negative consequences it could bring. I believe that America will see the complete legalization of marijuana within the next ten years. All it will take for weed to become legal is for voters to realize that legalizing weed is not the same as condoning it. Many Americans would outlaw fast food, tanning beds, alcohol, and smoking because of the harm they cause, but they do not because it is accepted that these things are a choice. It is time America sees marijuana from the same
Marijuana has been the center of debate for several years now. There are many opinions on the subject, some believe that marijuana will be a “save all” that can help with medical advances, is less harmful than alcohol along with the taxability, so they push extremely hard for it to be legal. Others believe it will cause the world to collapse starting with it being addicting and moving to the detrition of our mental health, and want to do all they can to keep it illegal. Even though some believe it is bad for your mental health and can be very addictive, marijuana should be legal because it has positive medicinal and recreational uses and is taxable and safer than alcohol.
Marijuana is the cause of much commotion and debate, as the question of legalization becomes more of an issue. Drugs are a major influential force in countries all over the world today. Legalization is an option that has not had a chance, but really should be given one. Although many people feel that legalizing marijuana would increase the amount of drug use, legalization would benefit for the following reasons: 1)reduction of money spent on law enforcement 2)increase in the countries revenue 3)lessen crime 4)useful in treating certain medical conditions. Many feel today we are losing the war on drugs.
At the end of the day, the pros weigh out the cons; therefore legalizing marijuana is the way to go. Why not make something useful out of a small leafy plant, that can help out the sick or create money to help pave the roads towards better education. The drug smuggling rate in other states can also decrease, with the legalization of marijuana. Most importantly marijuana can help improve the economy in the United States. With the help of legalizing marijuana people who are sick can have more comfort, schools can have a better budget and the drug smuggling rate can
Legalizing Marijuana has been a common subject for debate in the United States. As the debate continues on in the political system, marijuana has become the most popular illegal drug in the United States. There are many arguments for and against the legalization of marijuana ranging from the effects on the mind and body to the economic possibilities after legalization. Both sides embrace strong facts and stronger support, but much of these facts consist of similar research with contradicting results. The side that tends to have the most and the strongest support in the most prominent arguments, economics, health, and criminal association, is the group for legalizing marijuana.
The legalization of marijuana has been a highly debated topic for many of years. Since the first president to the most recent, our nation’s leaders have consumed the plant known as weed. With such influential figures openly using this drug why is it so frowned upon? Marijuana is considered a gateway drug, a menace to society, and mentally harmful to its consumers. For some people weed brings a sense of anxiety, dizziness, or unsettling feeling. Like alcohol, tobacco or any other drug, those chemicals may not respond well with their body. For other people marijuana brings joy, a sense of relief, and takes the edge off of every day stress. For those who are associated with cannabis, purposes usually range from a relaxant, or cash crop, to more permissible uses such as medicine, and ingredient to make so many other materials. We now need to look at what would change if marijuana were legal. Benefits to the economy and agriculture, health issues, and crime rates are three areas worth looking at. Deliberating on the pros and cons of this plant we can get a better understanding for marijuana. From there it will be easier to make a clear consensus on what is best for the nation.
By legalizing it for medical use the economy would be benefitted greatly. Seven million dollars alone is spent annually to keep the federal prohibition on marijuana and would actually make about $45 billion in profits. In twenty states it has already been legalized for medical use and in two for recreational use. In all these states, new jobs have been created in growing and distributing it in dispensaries. (“Marijuana and Medical Marijuana”) Other drugs and alcohol can increase violence and crime rates, marijuana does the opposite. Since it is a suppressant the user will not have any more if not less violent tendencies while using it. There are noticeable changes in society in states where it is legal. For example, crime rates have dropped up to 47% and a 15% decrease in murder in the state of Colorado, although along with Washington most states disagree with these states ' choices to make marijuana legal. (“Consumer’s Responses”) Marijuana has been proven to be up to 114 times safer than the already legal drug alcohol. (“Marijuana and Medical
The world is changing. The push for marijuana legalization is in full effect in the United States. With the legalization of medicinal marijuana in California on November 5, 1996, the United States has progressed in its movements for full legalization (mbc.ca.gov). Now with 21 states, plus Washington D.C, having state level medicinal marijuana legalization laws in full effect, along with both Colorado and Washington having recreational use of marijuana legalized, the United States is on a path for full legalization (whitehouse.gov). The legalization of cannabis in the United Sates will provide the state and federal governments with increased tax revenue, save money and resources from the war against marijuana, and most importantly, benefit the people in numerous ways.
The legalization of marijuana is considered a controversial issue, something that can benefit people for medical purposes, but what about recreationally? Marijuana has been illegal since 1937, but there’s never been a bigger push for legalization. There are several reasons why it is illegal, because of government propaganda and big industry not wanting to lose money, but this will be discussed later. The purpose of this paper is to educate, theorize, and discuss various aspects of marijuana, such as its history, development, and the advantages and disadvantages of marijuana legalization. Finally, my personal reflection on legalization and marijuana in general will be discussed.
People fail to see the positive outcomes of legalizing marijuana because they are too busy looking at the negative points against weed. There are solid facts against the arguments to keep marijuana an illegal substance however. There are two main reasons some Americans voice against the legalization of marijuana; it’s a so-called “gateway” drug and it can be harmful. People like to argue and say that users of cocaine, meth, heroine, etc would never have started abusing these drugs if they would not have started with marijuana. It is a fact that marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug. This may seem like a point against legalizing it, but it actually points out how it makes sense that drug users would have used marijuana. If marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug, then chances are that drug users would have tried marijuana at some point in their life. The other argument against the legalization of marijuana is how it can be harmful. It is time to get real though. Tobacco, alcohol, and pharmaceuticals are more detrimental to someone’s life than marijuana, but all are legal. Marij...
In conclusion, marijuana should be something that is permitted in the US. This is because it would benefit our economy, our nation’s youth, and it would protect the constitutional rights of the people. Bob Marley once said “Herb is the healing of a nation, alcohol is the destruction.” Although Marley is not a conventional source of inspiration, he brings a good point to the table. Why should alcohol be legal when it causes so many domestic issues in this country, while marijuana has not had a single violent crime associated with it?
There are excessive numbers of people who remain incarcerated for nonviolent crimes related to illegal marijuana use. Legalizing marijuana would allow these people to be released, opening jail space for the true criminals. Legalizing marijuana would free up law enforcement officers from focusing on illegal marijuana use and allow focus to be put on more serious crimes.
Marijuana is a very hot topic and also brings a lot of controversy among the topics in the U.S today. Many believe it has medicinal benefits and should be made legal when necessary. Many believe it has a really high risk for abuse. Amongst those arguments, some of the ingredience in medical marijuana have presented a greater argument for possible legalization through their use of research and evidence of beneficial use
Overtime people have researched marijuana heavily and learned a lot. Enough to change most of society's opinions about it to further allow possibilities of use. For example we have learned that marijuana helps people fight lots of diseases, such as cancer. The real reason however that marijuana is making so much headway into become legalized is because of the money potentials. The government wants more money and if they had to change some rules to do it then they will. Honestly I don't see why it is not already legal, because with a combination of it being helpful medically, plus the money potentials. Then you also have widespread community of people with no opposition to it being legalized. Marijuana is something that will just increase in popularity over time and become more controversial of a topic.
Many think marijuana should remain illegal, but legalization would have much more advantages if it were legalized already. Legalization has plenty of benefits, but most ideas are shunned by the media, which only shows the cons of decriminalization. It can help out the economy, which is not doing so well at the moment. There would be a decrease in drug violence, and more room would be made for real criminals in prisons. And also marijuana will be removed from the black market, away from the youth, and be regulated like alcohol.
“Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death” (“Why is Marijuana Illegal”). Outdated and falsely derived statements like these were among the leading factors that lead to marijuana prohibition, yet even though modern science has proven statements like these to be nothing but slander, marijuana is still federally illegal, and many people still view the plant as a dangerous narcotic. Marijuana is a misunderstood drug, and its medical prowess has been the center of much controversy for quite some time. The issue of marijuana prohibition has long been debated, ever since it began gaining support throughout the 1900’s. Many only see it for the negative light that has been unfairly reflected upon it
