Political Sovereignty
Sovereignty: supreme power or authority; the authority of a state to govern itself or another state . It is the history that proves that “tribal self-determination is, of course, an inherent attribute of tribal sovereignty, cherished and fiercely guarded by Indian people against all efforts to deprive tribes of this fundamental right” (La Velle). Tribal sovereignty is the immemorial right natives have endeavored to gain and to be self-governed. Federal Indian Laws are the yoke of the trials and tribulations that contributed to the identity of Indians today. Initially, it was the United States Government that legally gained access to tribal lands and membership rolls; now it is Tribes themselves who are following the …show more content…

Tribal sovereignty is instituted western values that were forced upon them while maintaining the right to manage membership rolls, judiciary, civil society and constitutions; unbeknown it is “a cruel fiction promulgated during the immediate past half-century with an eye towards improving the government… Since every aspect of tribal government must have the approval of the Secretary of the Interior” , Deloria describes as a generic model for self-determination. Since the times of oppression and the most current manifestation of this oppression is through conformation of tribal values into those of corporate culture. When a tribal government leans towards inequality it is necessary to seek change. Tribes themselves are recognized as a sovereign nation, however, there needs to be an impartial governmental intervention when our human rights are violated. To use sovereignty as a tool to commit cultural genocide should be thoroughly looked upon. Recently there has been a growing epidemic of forced tribal disenrollment. Maybe the Federal government shouldn’t give Tribes government funding if they are practicing unethical or immoral acts. Just like a government would do to any other international country that the United States is invested in put
