The Price of Free College
If you ask a college student at the beginning of the school year if they want someone to take care of their tuition fees there are few, if none, that would turn down the offer. Free college has been a major topic of discussion among Americans, especially since it was brought up again in 2016 presidential debates. Although there were many arguments for both sides, the U.S. Government should not pay for American citizens’ first two years of college. There are many reasons why many Americans would agree with this statement. Firstly, many college students do not take classes as seriously, if they do not have something invested in them. When students work hard they become eligible to receive scholarships. Scholarships are a major part of the college academic system. Students strive to keep their grades high to be able to continue to receive their financial aid. On the other side, there are people whose parents pay their tuition, that do not have very much motivation, do poorly, drop out, and waste the money given to them. Very rarely do people see students that have a job, an academic scholarship, or even athletic scholarships, that pays for their tuition, doing anything but trying their best to make good grades. In addition, high school students entering college might not know what they want to do yet and would have even less motivation to do well. American citizens think they have to go to college because it is what they are told. However, they could go into a trade and be just as successful. In his 2015 State of the Union Speech, Obama suggested, “…businesses to follow the lead of companies like CVS and UPS, and offer more educational benefits and paid apprenticeships – opportunities that give workers the chance to earn higher-paying jobs even if they don't have a higher education.” These types of programs allow people to invest in themselves and gives them motivation to succeed when they feel that college is not a good option for
