The legalization of marijuana has become as controversial as politics. Whether the herb is used for medical or recreational purpose, the line between marijuana being non-traditional or hazardous is far too thin. For many it is a horrible misconception that marijuana is “bad “only because they know it is not legal. The legalization of marijuana would be immensely beneficial for the U.S as a whole. The herb causes pain relief from many severe diseases like cancer or epilepsy and also increases appetite in people whom have HIV/AIDS or eating disorders. When it comes down to the legalizing of marijuana tho it may be a psychoactive drug that is what makes it all the more beneficial. The herb is not chemically enhanced or altered with. It is, as has been written, an herb that grows just like chamomile, mint or basil. It comes from the earth and has for thousands of years. The adverse effects are nothing more and if not less than FDA approved drugs for example, Tylenol, penciling common known over the counter drugs that for some have severe side effects. The FDA has actually approved “cannabinoid based drug” called Marihol. All medicines have side effects and marijuana’s are far less than those at a local pharmacy. Marijuana actually has a low dependency rate as well as mild withdraw symptoms (Benson). What about alcohol, it was at one point in time illegal to make or purchase yet now made legal in all 50 states with no known medical benefit. It is however linked to about 88,000 deaths a year, obesity; liver failure all the while marijuana has actually been found to help “alcoholics abstain from drinking alcohol.” (Swerdlow). Many studies have been done about the overall effects of marijuana but nothing was found conclusive to long term effects nor are there any effects to the brain or its cells, No cell death as many have tried to connect to marijuana and is the biggest go to when asked why marijuana is not good for one’s health.
