We all deserve to be treated equally. And yet, 3.52 billion women around the world are being impacted by the wage gap. This has been happening for a very long time and still has not been resolved. This is why many people in the world have chosen to take a stand and support this controversial topic. People everywhere have been fighting for fairness throughout the years, but the fight for women has never been resolved. Nevertheless, people are still fighting around the world for what is right. Women are paid 79% of what men are paid. For example, women in management, professional and other jobs like that are being paid $996. Men on the other hand, in the same job are being paid $1,245, if the previous statistic holds true. Plus, women have now surpassed men in educational degrees for people 25 and older. 40.7% of women 25 and older have obtained degrees, where 36.4% of men have done this. Even with this considered, women who may or may not have better education are paid less than men. If two people with the same degrees and education wanted to make the same amount of money, if one was a women and one was a man, the man would work for a year, and the women would have to work for 16 months. And they would be doing the same thing. Plus, on average, women spend more hours doing domestic work, even if they also do other work as an employee. This means that they have to take care of their homes and family for more of their time, while also having a full time job. This means that on average, women are working more, and sometimes harder, and still being paid less. It is proven women are paid less than the same job performed by others. This creates women to lose their self esteem and self confidence. Fifty-one years ago, in order to stop the gender gap discrimination, Congress enacted the Equal Pay Act of 1963. The act states that all women should receive “equal pay for equal work”. Unfortunately, even in 2014 the gender pay gap persists and even at the highest echelons of the corporate; therefore, the equal pay act is a failure.
